Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Sunset Chapel

Sunset Hills Mortuary | Dignity Memorial (2)Shortly after the death of Roy Rogers in 1998, his wife, Dale Evans, asked Sunset Hills' founder Chet Hitt to build a chapel in memory of the beloved American singer, Western film actor and television host. Roy was a native of Apple Valley, and Chet honored his memory with the Roy Rogers – Dale Evans Sunset Chapel. It opened in February 2007.

The Spanish Mission-style building sits waterside at Sunset Hills Mortuary. A brass relief mural depicting scenes from Roy and Dale's life adorns its front doors. Its back porch overlooks a small pond next to the lawn where outdoor funeral services and other events are sometimes held. Exterior walls hold granite-front cremation niches. The granite walkways are covered in heartfelt memorial messages etched into the stone. Inside is a cozy chapel with a large picture window that provides a spectacular mountain view.

Built especially for life celebrations, the Roy Rogers – Dale Evans Sunset Chapel has hosted not only memorial services, but also weddings, birthdays, banquets and charity events. With modern technology, a flexible layout, covered outdoor spaces and an experienced team attending to every detail, it's a fitting tribute to Roy and Dale—and a wonderful place for a catered receptionwith family and friends.

Cremation in the High Desert

Sunset Hills Mortuary | Dignity Memorial (3)We specialize in cremation services that honor loved ones in personalized ways, and families love our transparent pricing. With expertise in scattering ashes, the option for an attended cremation and a friendly team who pays attention to every detail, we provide service that is second to none.

More and more people are choosing cremation over traditional burial, but most aren’t familiar with all the choices:

  • a cremation without a funeral or memorial service of any kind.
  • a funeral with your loved one present, followed by cremation.
  • a cremation followed by a scattering, cemetery memorialization or celebration of life—or all three.

There are many cremation providers—and they're not all equal. Here's what you can expect when you choose us for your loved one's cremation:

  • Custody of care guaranteed. Our custody-of-care program helps safeguard the identification of your loved one from the time we bring them into our care until the time we return them to your family. We check, cross-check and check again, every step of the way.
  • Exclusive custody of your loved one. We use only crematories owned and operated by Dignity Memorial® providers or trusted partners. Once your loved one is in our custody or that of a trusted partner, they’re in our care until they’re returned to your family.
  • Licensed, certified, conscientious staff. All Dignity Memorial crematory operators in California are licensed and certified by Cremation Association of North America, or CANA. Only one person at a time is cremated, and the cremation chamber is thoroughly cleaned before the next person is cremated.

Sunset Hills Memorial Park

Sunset Hills Mortuary | Dignity Memorial (4)In 1960, we set out to design a final resting place unlike any other. Today, green lawns, mature trees, desert plants, boulder-lined pathways and a meandering waterfall that flows into a small pond come together in a park-like setting nestled into the Sycamore Rocks. Visitors love seeing our corral of horses.

Families from across the High Desert area choose our cemetery for its sun-drenched mountain vistas and wide range of options for burial and cremation. Spanning 30 acres, the cemetery is replete with natural beauty and opportunities for inspired reflection. It includes sections for those of the Jewish and Catholic faiths, as well as a veterans section for those who have served our country. Cremation property includes a scattering garden and cremation niches; some are set right into the desert's natural terrain.

A cemetery of historical significance, Sunset Hills Memorial Park is the final resting place of many stars of Old Hollywood Westerns. Roy Rogers is buried here. So is his wife Dale Evans, as are many of the men and women who worked alongside them, helping solidify American legend and lore. In addition, many Apple Valley pioneers and prominent local families have been laid to rest among these rocks.

Veterans funerals and burials

We deeply appreciate those who have sacrificed for our freedoms and feel privileged to honor veterans and their families in need of funeral, cremation and burial services. In addition to helping coordinate government benefits, Sunset Hills Mortuary and Sunset Hills Memorial Park offer special pricing on veterans services and property in the cemetery's Garden of Valor. We also offer the use of our 1898 horse-drawn hearse to veterans at no charge. This fully restored vehicle is the very same one that carried Roy Rogers to his final resting place.
