Peaky Blinders' Annabelle Wallis: 'I badgered Steven Knight to be the bride' (2024)

The heavily disguised Peaky Blinders bride in episode one of the third series turned out to be true love Grace Burgess.

Viewers across the country cheered as the veil was lifted and we discovered Tommy was marrying Grace, the mother of his son Charles.

It’s two years since we left the Shelbys and much has happened in the meantime.

Tommy and his family have moved into a very posh mansion, where they held their wedding.

Grace, it emerged, is free to marry him because her husband killed himself. She wore a lilac wedding dress to show she’s in mourning.

Actress Annabelle Wallis spoke about being the bride to the Birmingham Mail on the eve of the first episode.

“Yes it’s me, underneath that subtle veil!” she laughs. “I was trying not to trip up down the aisle as I couldn’t see anything.

“It took a moment to get used to the veil, being covered in my shining moment!

“It was amazing, I was very excited to be chosen as the bride.

“I was always convinced it was going to be me, but they wouldn’t tell me, even though I badgered writer Steven Knight and emailed Cillian Murphy to find out.

“Hopefully it’s what the audience wants. Grace is Tommy’s emotional pillar and they should be together.”

What will they be like as a married couple?

“They have love and a very strong bond, but they are flawed human beings.

“As much as Grace thinks she’s going to settle into married life, her ambition will come to the surface and make for interesting struggles within this alpha relationship.

“She can match Tommy with the same fire, so it’s very exciting.”

Co-star Helen McCrory who plays Aunt Polly adds: “Polly and Grace have been walking slowly round each other with hat pins drawn since they met.

“It’s good to do it in nicer frocks and on a better set.”
