Wild Grape Vines: Male orFemale?
Have you ever noticed that some wild grape vines bear fruit, while others appear barren? There is a very good reason for this — it depends on whether you are looking at a male or a female grape vine. The most common wild grapes in New England are Vitis labrusca (Fox Grape) or Vitis riparia (Riverbank Grape, or Frost Grape) – both of which have separate male and female plants (dioecious). The female plants, if their flowers are fertilized, produce grapes, whereas the flowers of the male vines do not. In contrast, most cultivated grape varieties are hermaphroditic — their flowers have both male and female reproductive structures, and can self-pollinate and produce fruit.

I very much recognize grape vines, love the smell of grapes…but ALL other info is new for me! 😮. Still so much to learn…I thought all wild grapes were Concord Grapes 😬🤭

…Excellent content here Mary. learned something new once again. This stuff grows all over my property and just yesterday in fact I tripped on it growing at ground level while handling my chainsaw. I took care of it in short order with my pruners!
I tend to follow it back to where it emerges from the ground and then snip it off & add it to the brush pile.
Thank you…September 20, 2018 at 9:37 am

A couple of years ago, I picked enough concord grapes and made a Wild Concord Grape Pie.
My mother made this favorite pie when I was a child. Yum!
It takes at several hours to squeeze all the tiny grapes, cook the filling, press out the seeds and bake the pie.
It takes 10 dollars worth of grapes and 10 minutes to squeeze the grapes from store bought concord grapes. They are usually only available for a few weeks in September.September 20, 2018 at 11:24 am
