What makes a fragrance masculine or feminine? ›

Traditional female oriented fragrances display sweet, floral and fruity notes like strawberry, jasmine, rose and vanilla while their male counterparts boast more intense, woody, and musky notes such as tobacco, oud, and leather.

It's largely down to the gender associations we learn through our culture and our memories – such as the scents we remember our parents or our first loves wearing. Certainly, the perfume industry follows cultural convention by labelling floral, fruity smells as being for women, and muskier, spicier smells for men.

Speaking in general terms, there's a common misconception that men don't like candles, let alone scented candles. Simply not true. Where this myth begins is the idea of a candle being feminine; men can feel a mild stigma, a pang of shame, around purchasing and enjoying a product that society has deemed to be feminine.

A masculine fragrance is usually a fragrance with a woody, green, smokey, or spicy scent with a heavy emphasis on the base notes of the fragrance.

Perfume has been categorised as masculine or feminine ever since its creation as a commercial product. Scents are assigned a gender based solely on the aroma chemicals that make up the juice: florals are feminine and musks are masculine.

The results of our meta-analysis indicate that women generally outperform men in olfactory abilities. What is more, they do so in every aspect of olfaction analyzed in the current study. However, the effect sizes were weak and ranged between g = 0.08 and g = 0.30.
