What is CEFR level A1? ›

English level A1 is the first level of English in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), a definition of different language levels written by the Council of Europe. In everyday speech, this level would be called “beginner”, and indeed, that is the official level descriptor in the CEFR, also used by EF SET.

The CEFR organises language proficiency in six levels, A1 to C2, which can be regrouped into three broad levels: Basic User, Independent User and Proficient User, and that can be further subdivided according to the needs of the local context. The levels are defined through 'can-do' descriptors.

Level C1 corresponds to proficient users of the language, i.e. those able to perform complex tasks related to work and study.

SKILLS AT LEVEL B1

Is able to understand the main points of clear texts in standard language if they are about topics with which they are familiar, whether in work, study or leisure contexts. Can cope with most of the situations that might arise on a trip to areas where the language is used.

Level B2 corresponds to independent users of the language, i.e. those who have the necessary fluency to communicate without effort with native speakers.

You can certify your C1 level of English by taking the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or the C1 Advanced. You can also choose the C1 Business Higher, the IELTS, the TOEIC, the TOEFL, or the Aptis, among others.

Level B2 corresponds to a more advanced, more independent level than previous levels. A B2 user can communicate easily and spontaneously in a clear and detailed manner. This is not yet an experienced speaker, but a B2 user is able to understand and be understood in most situations.

The three broad levels are A1/A2 ("Basic User"), B1/B2 ("Independent User"), and C1/C2 ("Proficient User"). Let's take a look at what you should be able to communicate at the various levels set out by CERF. Language learning levels explained from A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 to C2.

CEFR is also used for other language tests throughout Europe and not only for IELTS. It is used for the conversion of scores in TOEFL as well. Thus CEFR exam or CEFR levels bypass terms such as intermediate, beginner, or even advanced which are not accurate indicators of proficiency in a language.

Is CEFR C1 fluent? ›

CEFR-level C1 (advanced)

You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. You can use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes.

The answer is yes! You will need to work a lot harder and be serious about your preparation for the C1 Advanced exam. While the B2 First shows you have a good grounding in English, the C1 Advanced is closer to the level of a native speaker.

C1 is an advanced English level. C1 users can speak English with ease, and understand the language in (almost!) all of its complexity.

English test C2 (Proficiency)

Can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

An A2 level of English is sufficient for tourism in an English-speaking country and socializing with English speakers, although to develop deeper friendships an A2 level is not adequate.

Passing the B1 writing exam is not an easy task. You need advanced preparations to successfully complete this English test. Languages are the most complex subjects. You need lots of patience and practice to learn a new language.

B2 First – Level C1

If you achieve a scale score of 180–190 (grade A) in your exam, you will receive the First Certificate in English stating that you demonstrated ability at Level C1.

Level B2: Basic Fluency

Reaching B2 is generally considered by most people as having basic fluency. You'll have a working vocabulary of around 4000 words.

C2 Proficiency, formerly known as Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE), is one of our Cambridge English Qualifications. It is our highest-level qualification – proof that you are a highly competent speaker of English. A C2 Proficiency qualification shows the world that you have mastered English to an exceptional level.

Are native speakers C1? ›

The highest level on the CEFR scale is C1, which is close to the level of English proficiency of native speakers.

C1 Advanced Scale Scores

The examination also provides reliable assessment at the level above C1 (Level C2) and the level below (Level B2).

A higher level of fluency – top B2 (upper intermediate) into C1 (advanced/operational proficiency) (ILR 2+ to 3+) is said to take 550 to 900 hours.

The score 6.5 is borderline B2/C1. The real-world level of performance represented by the result has not changed.

Sign up for a C1 English course. Read a lot of books as they are an excellent resource when it comes to learning new terms and expressions. Commit to writing formal documents and not just text messages and emails. Runs meetings in English as a means to gain fluency and to use idioms that you have learned.

To get from A1 to A2, it typically requires 100-150 hours of guided learning, but it can take 180-260 hours to get from B1 to B2.

A0/A1 English (Beginner/Elementary)

Level A0/A1 corresponds to basic users of English who can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases.

An IELTS band 4.5 is between an IELTS band 4 and a band 5. At an IELTS band 4, you have a very basic understanding of English and you are more comfortable communicating in familiar situations. It is difficult to use complex language. Then, at an IELTS band 5, you have a limited command of the language.

Upper-intermediate level B2-B2+

You learn to understand the main ideas of complex speech on concrete and abstract topics. You learn to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity. You learn to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.

A2 Level - INTERMEDI

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.

Otherwise known as a “super-beginner”, at A1 level English you have very limited knowledge of the language. However, you will still be able to manage everyday situations with commonly-used expressions and vocabulary (as long as the situation is familiar).

Level A1: Super Beginner

When you reach the A1 level, you will have a rough working vocabulary of about 700 words.
