Melbiller er en samling insekter i familie skyggebiller (Tenebrionidae) som er et vanlig syn i mange norske hjem. De vanligste artene man finner i Norge er stor melbille (Tenebrio molitor), brunsvart melbille (Tribolium destructor), sagtannet melbille (Oryzaephilus surinamensis) og rismelbille (Tribolium confusum).

Melbiller kommer som oftest inn i bygningen via en infisert melpose, dyrefor eller lignende. Bor du i en leilighet kan de også komme fra naboleiligheten. Man kan som regel unngå større angrep ved å ha gode forebyggende rutiner

Kjennetegn på melbille

  • Skyggebiller har en tredelt kropp hvor det midterste leddet har en “brem”, derav navnet.
  • Stor melbille er brunsvart og blir 15-20 mm. Larven er gulbrun, glatt og blir opptil 30 mm.
  • Brunsvart melbille er en brun bille som blir 5-6 mm. Larven blir 8-10 mm og er gulbrun i fargen.
  • Sagtannet melbille er ca 2,5 mm lang, brun og har en taggete «brem» på midtpartiet.
  • Rismelbille blir opptil 4 mm lang og er lysebrun. Larven kan bli opptil 8-10 mm og er lysere enn billen.

Slik lever melbille

Melbiller er tørrvaredyr og spiser mel, havregryn, frokostblandinger, nøtter og tørrfor til dyr. Billene kan ødelegge matvarer fullstendig, men de gjør ingen skade på huset for øvrig. De kan leve i opptil to måneder uten mat

Utviklingen fra egg til voksen bille tar ca. tre måneder. Billene kan leve i tre-fire år. Hunnene legger eggene i matvarene de lever i, og kan legge så mye som 1000 egg i løpet av sin levetid. Etter 1-2 uker klekkes eggene.

Hvordan bli kvitt melbille

  • Har du fått med deg melbille hjem via matvarer, kan du lett bli kvitt problemet ved å fjerne larvene eller hele matvaren.
  • Lokaliser bo- og formeringsstedet til billene. Det er ofte en melpose, havregrynpose eller lignende, og kast eller frys denne.
  • Støvsuging er en utmerket måte å fjerne både mel og skadedyr på – uten at du tilfører f*cktighet til huset (som er gunstig for skadedyrene).
  • Kast støvsugerposen slik at de ikke sprer seg på nytt.
  • Hvis larver har etablert seg på kjøkkenet, er det viktig å sjekke alle matvarer og å rengjøre kjøkkenet grundig.

Slik unngår du melbille

  • Oppbevar mel og andre kornprodukter i tette beholdere, for eksempel i bokser av hard plast.
  • Rengjør jevnlig og hold skapene ryddige og rene.
    Sjekk matvarer jevnlig.
  • Melvarer som har stått urørt lenge er spesielt utsatte.
