How to Become a Pinterest Virtual Assistant and Make a Full-Time Income

Hi everybody, I’m Melissa! Before I buckled down and really started side hustling, I hadn’t taken it that seriously. I had known about side hustling for a while since I started my frugal living blog in 2014, but I didn’t pursue it 100% for myself. I did a few freelance writing jobs for $50 an article, but other than that, I stuck to my regular full-time 9-to-5 and side hustled by word of mouth.

That all changed in 2015 when my now-husband and I got engaged. We had planned to pay for everything as we went along (aka “cash flow” the wedding), and we estimated we’d have a two-year engagement.

But then my Dad got really sick – so sick we weren’t sure if he’d make it (he’s fine now, spoiler! :)) So we pushed up the wedding date by a whole year – which suddenly meant we were looking at having debt from our wedding, starting off our married life with joint debt.

My husband and I both have our own student loan debt, and we weren’t thrilled about adding more debt. We also wanted to buy a house together, and having so much debt wouldn’t look good to lenders. So we challenged each other to find more money, outside of our regular full-time jobs.

My husband is a teacher, so he chose the site Teachers Pay Teachers. I was already on Pinterest for fun, so I chose to focus on learning how to become a Pinterest virtual assistant.

The very first thing I did was let everyone I knew, all of my good blogging friends, that I was becoming a Pinterest virtual assistant. It worked! I got my first client – for $50 a month.

Yes, now I realize that’s way too low, but it was a great start. Plus, I did such a good job, I started getting referrals from that client. That first $50 client referred me to clients who started paying me $100, $200, $250 and more – every month.

Distinguishing Yourself

Many people started becoming Pinterest virtual assistants around this time, so I knew I had to distinguish myself. I bought a virtual assistant course, read everything I could online about marketing on Pinterest, and started offering more services.

In addition to regular pinning, I offered clients:

  • Image creation
  • Scheduling on Tailwind and Board Booster
  • Personalized weekly updates
  • Monthly updates highlighting upcoming trends on Pinterest (these gave my clients ideas for future blog posts, which helped them!)

Anything I could do to be more helpful for my clients, I did – and I started getting paid even more for it.

My $1,000 Client

Then one day, I had a friend refer me to a big company. The company didn’t really understand social media at all. At the very same time, I had over 8 clients – and remember, I was planning a wedding and working a full-time job!

I was starting to get burned out and, based on the work this company wanted me to do, I decided to quote them $50 an hour. Many of my Pinterest clients didn’t require more than 4 hours a month of work, so I figured $50 x 4 for this company = $200, not bad, right?

Well, they accepted… and told me they wanted me to do all their social media for 20 hours a month. That meant $1,000 a month in social media management (mostly Pinterest)! And all because I had hustled hard, put my name out there, and did a good job!

Pinterest Basically Paid for My Wedding

We got married in February 2016 and had about $5,000 in debt from the wedding. We started hustling in January 2016 and, by December 2016, we had paid off all the wedding debt just from my Pinterest side hustle.

In total, I worked about 20 hours extra a month on Pinterest (a little more when I got the big client, but I also let some smaller clients go to balance out the time commitment). It was worth it!

Side Hustling and Working a Full-Time Job

My husband and I both had demanding full-time jobs, plus we were planning a wedding and, shortly thereafter, moving into a new house. Now that’s an excuse not to side hustle!

But the truth is, if you want to pay off debt, you may have to work some late nights. You may have to make some sacrifices. But side hustling also taught us a lot: we were (and are) hard workers who are willing to put in the effort and make our family’s finances better.

Whether you decide to be a Pinterest VA, freelance writer, or heck, even someone who makes curriculum on Teachers Pay Teachers, find something you’re interested in and monetize it! If you need to hustle to pay off debt or save up money, it helps to have your side hustle at least be fun and interesting 🙂
