Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (2024)

Don't Starve Together is a sequel game to Don't Starve, allowing fans to enjoy a multiplayer option. While there are three different modes to the game, most players enjoy the default mode, which creates a cooperative, difficult world where players need to survive a strange and deadly world. Gather resources, explore the map, create structures and weapons, and help each other stay alive in the daunting environment.

Melee weapons are a necessity to keep characters safe throughout their time in Don't Starve Together when flighting off Mobs, finding food and progressing the game when fighting Bosses. Some melee weapons take high risks to acquire or to use, while others are easily craftable and simple. However, knowing which ones that can cause the most damage without the most give is important when surviving this game.

10 Spear

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (1)

The Spear is one of the first craftable weapons in the game, however, it isn't the most powerful. Dealing 34 damage per hit, the spear is one of the weakest melee weapons.

The durability allows for 150 hits, and all it requires for crafting is one Flint, one Rope, two Twigs, and a Science Machine to prototype. One of the bonuses to a spear is that if you have a Shadow Manipulator, you can turn the weapon into either an Ice or Fire Staff.

9 Axe

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (2)

While the Axe is not considered a weapon in the game, it is a useful tool when players are in a bind. As it only required one Twig and one Flint, this item can be crafted early in the game for quick protection.

Players can even upgrade their weapon to a Luxury Axe (required Gold Nuggets instead of Flint) or Moon Glass Axe (three Moon Shards instead of Flint) for better durability and damage.

8 Bat Bat

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (3)

This magical melee weapon can be hard to use. There are many pros and cons to this weapon that some players find to be not worth it, or very useful. It deals 42.5 damage, has a durability of 75 uses, takes 6.8 health from non-wall enemies, but does take 3.4 sanity from players if their health is not full.

This weapon requires a Shadow Manipulator for a prototype and five Batilisk Wings, two Living Logs and one Purple Gem to craft. Players can also find the Bat in an Ornate Chest which appears in Ruins.

7 Tail O' Three Cats

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (4)

While its primary use is to whip Mobs into submission, making it a passive weapon, players can deal some damage with it. The snap occurs 25% for Animals, 20% for Monsters, and 5% for Bosses. This does buy players some time, but Mobs can still reaggro.

Dealing 27.2 damage with a durability of 175, this is a decent weapon of choice. Crafting the item only takes three Cat Tails and one Tentacle Spots. This can also be considered as a range weapon.

6 Ham Bat

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (5)

This unique weapon has no durability limit, however, it does spoil after ten days. Meaning, players can use this weapon as often as they wish within the ten-day period. While the damage deals 59.5, it will start to go down as it slowly spoils.

The Ham Bat requires one Pig Skin, two Twigs, and two Meat to craft and an Alchemy Engine to prototype. While the weapon is made out of meat, it will not cause Mobs to become aggressive. Players can also use an Ice Box or Snow Chester in order to prevent the weapon from rotting quickly.

5 Tentacle Spike

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (6)

Another weapon that can be gained early in the game, however, with great risk. When fighting Tentacles, which are found in Marshes and Caves, there is a 50% drop rate. Big Tentacles, which can only be found in Caves, also have a chance at dropping one, however, they can only drop one each day.

This weapon does 51 damage per hit with 100 durability. While this item can not be crafted, it is easy to farm early on in the game. The main downside is having to fight Tentacles to obtain this item.

4 The Thulecite Club

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (7)

This craftable weapon can be made by using Ancient Pseudoscience Station. Requiring three Living Logs, four Thulecite and four Nightmare Fuel, the Club causes 59.9 damage per hit with increased movement speed by 10% and 200 durability.

There is an 8.3% chance that this Club can be found inside a Large Ornate Chest. This weapon not only has speed boost, but has an added potential bonus that is useful to many players. When crafting this weapon, there is a 20% chance that a Shadow Tentacle will spawn, lasting nine seconds and dealing 34 damage to enemies nearby.

3 The Morning Star

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (8)

This weapon is from the Reign of Giants DLC and requires one Volt Goat Horn, two Electrical Doodads, and two Nitre to craft with an Alchemy Engine to prototype. Unlike a lot of weapons in the game, this one does not lose durability when being used. Instead, it loses durability when being held (about 6 minutes in total), so make sure to drop it when not needed.

The Star emits light while equipped, a great advantage when it's time for cave explorations. It can do either 43.35 damage on a dry mob, or 72.25 damage on a wet enemy, meaning this is also a great weapon for the spring when it rains a lot.

2 Glass Cutter

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (9)

This weapon is exclusive to Don't Starve Together. It can be crafted with one Board and six Moon Shards, however, players do need to be near the Celestial Altar. This weapon can do 68 damage per hit and has a durability of 75 uses on regular Mobs, but 150 on shadows.

While the Glass Cluster deals the same damage as the Dark Sword, this is a great weapon to use against shadows. Players find this weapon more useful against the Shadow Pieces than the Dark Sword because the latter usually leads to extra Shadow Creatures spawning.

1 Dark Sword

Don't Starve Together: 10 Best Melee Weapons, Ranked (10)

This magical melee weapon is a favorite amongst players. A shadow Manipulator is needed for a prototype. To craft it, players need five Nightmare Fuel and one Living Log. This weapon does 68 damage with 100 durability. It does cost 20 Sanity a minute while equipped, however, it is one of the strongest weapons in the game.

Due to the perks, this Sword proves useful when wielded by Wolfgang, Maxwell (starting weapon in single-player), Wigfrid and Wanda. While some players might be intimidated with the Sanity drop, the drain isn't the worst problem when playing with characters like Maxwell, or if players can pair the Sword with Sanity clothes, which can reduce the effects.

Don't Starve Together is out now for PlayStation 4, macOS, Xbox One, Linux, and Microsoft Windows
