Poor Nitrogen Levels: Clover thrives in soil with poor nitrogen levels. Grass needs nitrogen in the soil to grow well, while clover can obtain the nitrogen it needs from the air, effectively making its own fertilizer. Your soil may be low in nitrogen because you've used too much fast-acting fertilizer.
How many years will clover last?
In fact, clover will last three years if maintained correctly (mowed at least once per year, possibly sprayed for grasses annually and fertilized annually). If the clover is looking good, there is no reason to kill it and till it under unless you want to plant something like Big N Beasty there for the fall.

Compacted soil

Arrest Max is a selective grass herbicide that will control most grasses, without harming clover, alfalfa, chicory or any Whitetail Institute perennial food plot.
Controlling Widespread Clover
The best defense against all weeds, including clover, is a healthy, dense turf in addition to aeration and overseeding. When a lawn is aerated, small pockets of soil are removed, which serves to loosen the soil overall.
Planting Clover
You can plant clover by itself for ground cover, but it stands up better to foot traffic when combined with lawn grass. Only 5 to 10% of the weight of tiny clover seed needs to be mixed with the recommended amount of grass seed to create a thick stand.
Once established, perennial clover comes back reliably, making it more suitable as a ground cover than annual species that usually need reseeding each year. Perennial clover will self-seed too, but it spreads consistently through its creeping root system.
Will clover choke out grass?
