How long does clover last?
In fact, clover will last three years if maintained correctly (mowed at least once per year, possibly sprayed for grasses annually and fertilized annually). If the clover is looking good, there is no reason to kill it and till it under unless you want to plant something like Big N Beasty there for the fall.
Over-sow directly after grazing (≤ 4cm post-grazing sward height) or after cutting the paddock for surplus bales – ideally only over-sow three to four paddocks at a time. Sow at a rate of 5.0-6.0kg of white clover seed/ha. Soil contact post over-sowing is one of the most crucial factors affecting germination.
A hardy plant, clover is not easily evicted. Some of the best ways to attack it include increasing your mowing height, using corn gluten meal, and investing in an organic weed killer. Long, healthy grass will help crowd out clover's growth, and a weed killer can take care of the rest.

Poor Nitrogen Levels: Clover thrives in soil with poor nitrogen levels. Grass needs nitrogen in the soil to grow well, while clover can obtain the nitrogen it needs from the air, effectively making its own fertilizer. Your soil may be low in nitrogen because you've used too much fast-acting fertilizer.
The clover will start sprouting in as little as two to three days, but can take up to seven to 10 days depending on the temperature. Keep the area watered and moist where the seeds have been spread.
Clover can be seeded in early spring after the last frost. Make sure your soil is well aerated and be sure to keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate (about two weeks). Clover can be reseeded every 2-3 years to help keep new, healthy clover growing.
What causes clover not to grow?
Clover failure may result from one of the following causes or from combinations of them: Unfavorable soil conditions; unadapted or poor seed; poor methods of seeding; wrong treatment; diseases and insects. Abnormal weather, such as severe drought, may also cause the death of seedling plants.

If the clover is looking good, there is no reason to kill it and till it under unless you want to plant something like Big N Beasty there for the fall.
Thick lawns are able to crowd out weeds like clover. It may be tempting to lower your mower height to mow over all the clover, but it's actually more beneficial to raise it. Clover is low-growing and its roots are shallow.
Clover, which is more heat and drought tolerant than grass, is an alternative that could still allow for pleasant lawns, while steering people away from wasting water and resources to keep their grass lush. “One of the great things about clover is that it doesn't mind the heat.
Planting Clover
You can plant clover by itself for ground cover, but it stands up better to foot traffic when combined with lawn grass. Only 5 to 10% of the weight of tiny clover seed needs to be mixed with the recommended amount of grass seed to create a thick stand.
Clover is resilient, and its strength actually smothers other weeds. If your mower is tired of picking up those pesky, hard-to-kill weeds, clover may be the way to go. Growing clover does not allow room for typical lawn weeds to thrive, meaning the lawns you mow could be weed-free and beautiful!
Clover can tolerate a variety of light levels, from full sun to partial shade (with 2-6 hours of direct sun per day). However, though clover is generally more shade-tolerant than grass, it can't handle every level of shade.
Occasional mowing will “stunt” it and keep it shorter and with even smaller leaves and no blooms. But even left un-mowed, they will not spread as aggressively or flower as much, therefore, seedless. Micro clover is best combined with a traditional grass lawn.
Mow Your Plots
White clovers will do well when mowed aggressively and often during the cooler periods of the growing season or when ample moisture is available. However, during hot, dry times they should be mowed less often and not as short, or maybe not mowed at all and left to go to seed.
The other is to promote growth. If weeds are a problem, you might want to mow early — maybe right now in June. If not, the best time to mow is when you see clover plants begin to flower. Mowing will stall the maturation process and promote growth of runners and “daughter” plants.
Is it too late to plant clover?
It's best to plant them in spring, but you can also start the seeds in early summer. The key is to wait for the ground to become moist and soft enough because of the spring rains. In some locations, you can even plant clover seeds as late as September or early October.
Temperatures for an extended period in the low twenties (20°F – 25°F) may kill established alfalfa or red clover.
Seed can be sown directly over established turf grasses. Mow your grass at a low setting and gently raking out any built-up thatch. Then mix seed with sand, sawdust, fine compost, or soil, to make even distribution easier. Broadcast seeds over the planting area.
