You’re Breaking Me Up (2024)

in:Quests

You’re Breaking Me Up is a quest given by your partner after not speaking to them for a week. The quest can be declined if you would like to stay with them, or accepted if you would like to break up with them. It requires you to visit Francis, buy a break-up ring for 1000 coins, and deliver it to your partner to become single again.

Breaking up with a character will reduce your relationship with them to four hearts, and you cannot date them again after breaking up with them.

Dialogue[]

  • Tara: Francis, I tried breaking up with [character], but [they] said I needed to see you?
  • Francis: Well. A: I can’t say I’m terribly surprised, yours was always a bit of a bird and fish pairing. And B: Yes, we do have a formal custom for breakups here. Back when Fairhaven was founded, there was a ship’s captain who accidentally romanced a pair of identical twin sisters, believing they were the same woman.
  • Tara: Yikes. That sounds messy.
  • Francis: Oh yes it was. They found out, and… drama. They made him choose. He felt guilty, so he had a ring made for the one he didn’t pick. An, “un-engagement ring” if you will, with a pair of gold wings to symbolize setting her free.
  • Tara: Did it work? Or was she still mad?
  • Francis: Oh, honey. She flung that thing into the ocean in front of the whole town. And it instantly became a tradition. Whenever anyone breaks up in Fairhaven, the dumper buys the dumpee a copy of that ring.
  • Tara: Oh. I guess it’s a fair gesture. How much is that going to cost me?
  • Francis: Oh, you haven’t heard the worst part. Keeping with tradition, the dumped party always throws the ring into the ocean. We believe you won’t find new love unless you do.
  • Tara: That… is nuts.
  • Francis: You don’t have to tell me. So much wasted precious metal… sometimes I comb the beach with a metal detector hoping to score some discarded rings. So. Are you here for the breakup ring?
  • --[Choice: Yes (1000 coins)]
    • Tara: I’ve heard of flushing money down the toilet, but never throwing it directly into the sea. Fine.
    • Francis: A small price to pay for freedom, I guess. Here you go.
  • --[Choice: No]

Character-Specific Dialogue[]

Amira[]

Break-up:

  • Amira: Tara, you haven’t spoken to me in a week. I know we’re both busy, but… did I do something to upset you?
  • --[Choice: No, of course not]
    • -
  • --[Choice: I want to break up]
    • Tara: I’m sorry, I’ve just been working up the courage to tell you. I don’t think we should be together anymore.
    • Amira: I had a feeling. You’ve seemed off lately. But listen, I really think you should sleep on it. If you still feel this way, go see Francis. We have a custom here for breakups – he’ll explain it.

Giving the ring:

  • Tara: Amira, I have something for you.
  • Amira: Ah, I see. Well, I guess this means you’ve given it thought. It was wonderful being with you, even if only for a short while. I wish you the best. Really, I do.

Cameron[]

Break-up:

  • Cameron: Darling, is something wrong? I haven’t seen much of you lately.
  • --[Choice: No, of course not]
    • Tara: Of course not, Cameron! I’m sorry, I’ve just been running around too much.
    • Cameron: Well, far be it for me to keep someone off their path. Just let me know if I can be of any help, my love.
  • --[Choice: I want to break up]
    • Tara: I’m sorry, I’ve just been working up the courage to tell you. I don’t think we should be together anymore.
    • Cameron: Oh. I will admit, I didn’t expect this. I’m not one for old customs, but there is one here in this town that I think is quite compelling. Go see Francis. He’ll explain.

Giving the ring:

  • Tara: Cameron, I have something for you.
  • Cameron: Okay, I will respect your decision. Well, I still hope to see you at the Consciousness Center whenever you care to join us.

Damon[]

Break-up:

  • Damon: Kitten, what’s up? I know you’re an early bird and I’m a night owl, but I haven’t seen you all week. Did I do something?
  • --[Choice: No, of course not]
    • -
  • --[Choice: I want to break up]
    • Tara: I’m sorry, I’ve just been working up the courage to tell you. I don’t think we should be together anymore.
    • Damon: No, kitten, we’ve got a good thing going! Listen, I’ll give you some space. If you still want to end things, go see Francis. He’ll explain.

Giving the ring:

  • Tara: Damon, I have something for you.
  • Damon: I get it. Okay. Well, we can be friends then. I guess I can’t call you kitten anymore. See you around, new girl.

Giva[]

Break-up:

  • Giva: Dear one, this week you’ve been as scarce as a solar tsunami. Have I upset you?
  • --[Choice: No, of course not]
    • Tara: Of course not, Giva! I’m sorry, I’ve just been running around too much.
    • Giva: Thank goodness! You had me worried. I know it might seem like I’m content to spend all my time in the observatory, but I still want to see you!
  • --[Choice: I want to break up]
    • Tara: I’m sorry, I’ve just been working up the courage to tell you. I don’t think we should be together anymore.
    • Giva: You… you really think so? That’s devastating. Still – Francis told me that the islanders have a peculiar way of ending relationships. You should ask him about it before you give up on us for good.

Giving the ring:

  • Tara: Giva, I have something for you.
  • Giva: I understand, I suppose. Thank you for the good will you’ve showed me since I got here. I hope you’ll continue to be kind, even if we aren’t together.

Kai[]

Break-up:

  • Kai: Sunshine, like, what’s up? It’s been totally flat, and I still haven’t seen you much lately! Did I make you mad?
  • --[Choice: No, of course not]
    • Tara: Of course not, Kai! I’m sorry, I’ve just been running around too much.
    • Kai: Dude, I get it. If it was pumping, I would be out on the water all day. But like, I miss you.
  • --[Choice: I want to break up]
    • Tara: I’m sorry, I’ve just been working up the courage to tell you. I don’t think we should be together anymore.
    • Kai: Whoa. Bummer. Look, you gotta do you. If you’re like, serious, go see Francis. He’ll explain.

Giving the ring:

  • Tara: Kai, I have something for you.
  • Kai: Brah well, thanks for like, not just ghosting me I guess. See ya.

Kim[]

Break-up:

  • Kim: Babe, let’s talk. Are you avoiding me? I haven’t seen you all week.
  • --[Choice: No, of course not]
    • -
  • --[Choice: I want to break up]
    • Tara: I’m sorry, I’ve just been working up the courage to tell you. I don’t think we should be together anymore.
    • Kim: Oh. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Listen, this town is super weird, but there is one custom that I think is actually kind of human and cool. Go see Francis. He’ll explain.

Giving the ring:

  • Tara: Kim, I have something for you.
  • Kim: Thanks for not stringing me along, I guess. Let’s stay friends? I’ll see you around.

Westley[]

Break-up:

  • Westley: Tara, I haven’t seen you in awhile. I know you might not always make it all the way to Ravenwood Hollow, but is something wrong?
  • --[Choice: No, of course not]
    • Tara: Of course not, love! I’m sorry, I’ve just been running around too much.
    • Westley: I understand! Just run my way sometimes, maybe.
  • --[Choice: I want to break up]
