Life Before Fairhaven
Before he came to Fairhaven, he lived in the city. Shelby was born to a Romani family in Hungary.

Lina: My dad lives in Milkwater, remember? Parker and I run the store now.
Shelby: Oh. Yes. Hard to keep all that straight.
Tara: Oh! You knew Lina’s father. How long have you lived on the island?
Shelby: Here’s a riddle for an answer. What is older’n we can fathom, but is reborn every month?

Tara: Something fascinating about that tree in particular?
Shelby: Wahh! Who’s – oh, it’s you. Beg pardon. My hearing isn’t what it used to be. T’answer your question: every tree is fascinating! Ever since I started living out here, I’ve tried to treat them as individuals. Each tree has stories, after all. Tell me, did ya ever get t’know the natural world back in the city?

Tara: Do you prefer life here?

Finn: Ohmygosh! I did the card trick just like you said! I can’t wait to show my mom and dad!
Shelby: Don’t show them how the trick works, ya hear? Real magic has gotta stay secret!
Tara: You’re so gentle with all the kids Shelby. Gentler than you treat their parents.
Shelby: They haven’t learned t’disrespect me yet. Besides, where I come from, we treasure children.
Tara: Where you come from… you mean the city?
Shelby: Heh! No, no, somewhere much farther away than that.
Tara: I get the sense you’ve lived a very full life. Lots of adventure. Am I onto something?
Shelby: Ya haven’t the half of it! But one day you’ll understand. You’re destined for as much adventurin’ as me.

Shelby: Tara, there’s something I’ve been meaning t’say to ya. I’m so very sorry about your gran. I knew her death was coming, but… it still hurt. Hazel and Markus were the only people I could talk to about where I came from. Sometimes, I wish so hard that they were still here that I forget they’re even gone.
Tara: You can talk to me. I know I haven’t been here as long. But I’ll always listen.
Shelby: I think… I think I will tell you. Just a bit. I was born in Hungary. I know I don’t sound like it! Spent most of my time on these shores after my parents passed.
Tara: I’m sorry to hear about your parents.
Shelby: They knew it was comin’. They were – I am – Romani. No one read cards better than my ma. But that’s a story for another time. I think my sharing gears are rusty. Can – can that happen?
