The term ‘flower power’ became synonymous with the 1960’s. This slogan is used to describe the passive, peaceful resistance movement of the time, which was rooted in the opposition against the Vietnam War. The flower came to be an iconic symbol of non-violence and harmony. Collectively, these people became known as ‘hippies’, a counter-culture developed from large groups of people with these same beliefs of peace, love and saying no to violence.

The 1960’s was also a time where youths began to rebel against the conformity of the 1950’s. They broke free from societal norms and began experimenting in the time of free love, psychedelic drugs and rock and roll music. Designers took notice and the fashion soon began to reflect the changing attitudes and free spirits of the time. People began to embrace the symbolism of flowers by wearing clothing adorned with intricate flower details on their clothing, with colours as vibrant and beautiful as real flowers.
