The Five Sweetest Vegetables You Can Snack On (2024)
Written by Daisy Whitbread BSc (Hons) MSc DipION
Vegetables, even vegetables high in sugar, can make a great snack. Especially if you are trying to stop snacking on unhealthy candies or fried snacks. The best vegetables to snack on include podded peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, and rutabagas (swedes/neeps).
Podded Peas have only 26 calories per cup, around 4 calories per pod. Simply wash the pods and pack them as a snack. Podded peas can be eaten raw, and have a satisfying crunchy texture.
Crunchy, sweet, and packed with vitamins, carrots are an excellent snack food. A single baby carrot has only 5 calories. Whole carrots are also a great option with only 30 calories in the average carrot.
Packed with vitamins A,C,K, potassium, iron, and calcium, sweet potatoes are a super vegetable. Sweet potatoes can be cut and eaten raw, or quickly baked in the microwave. Bake five on Sunday and keep them in the fridge for the work week. Sweet potatoes are sweet, and taste great hot or cold. A medium sized sweet potato provides around 105 calories.
Beets are one of the sweetest vegetables around, and a good source of fiber. A single beet only contains around 35 calories. Beware of pickled beets which can have a lot of added sugar.
Rutabagas have a sweet nutty flavor and are amazingly filling. Chop them into sticks and enjoy them raw the next time you are overcome with a snack craving. One cup chopped has only 50 calories.
Food items like cucumbers, carrots, radishes, beetroot and tomatoes can be eaten raw in the form of salads. Potatoes should be well cooked before consuming them.
According to the CDC, watercress is the most nutrient-rich vegetable on earth. Because high-level amino acid is found in it, it helps in digesting proteins and producing neurotransmitters.
Answer. There are several vegetables that have been characterized as tasting sweet. These include sweet corn, sweet peppers, sweet onions and shallots. Some tomato varieties may taste sweet which is not surprising since technically they are botanically classified as a fruit.
The brinjal was given the title of King of Vegetables because of its astonishingly awesome purple covering, and also the juicy and rich nutritional values in them. Eggplant, aubergine, and brinjal are members of the Solanaceae family.
2. Kale. Kale has become more popular as a health food in the past few decades. But this leafy green vegetable has been used as medicine for much longer than that.
Green leafy vegetables: Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and beet greens are high in vitamins, magnesium, and potassium. They help maintain a healthy digestive tract. Berries: Berries are high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.
Blueberries take the title of healthiest fruit. Blueberries' stunning hue comes from their anthocyanins — an antioxidant believed to be responsible for their numerous health benefits. Long-term studies suggest that including blueberries in your regular lineup may lower the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
