Tartaglia (Childe) Guide - Best Builds and Tips - Genshin Impact Wiki Guide - IGN (2024)

This page is part of IGN's Genshin Impact Wiki guide and details everything you need to know about Tartaglia (Childe), which includes a full character overview, how to obtain Tartaglia (Childe), combat details, talents and skill upgrade priorities, a recommended character build, and much more.

Known as Childe for much of your early interactions with him, Snezhnayan-native Tartaglia is a natural-born fighter. His warm, handsome exterior hides a cunning killer who, through his alias, sits as the eleventh of the fatui harbingers. The youngest of the bunch, he’s also revered as the most powerful and dangerous. Many struggle to understand which side of Tartaglia is the real one, but one thing they all agree on is that he’s a honed instrument of war. Furthering this fact, while a master of most weapon types, he uses a bow because his lack of experience with them makes each kill that much more exhilarating.

Though a member of the Fatui harbingers as Childe, Tartaglia doesn’t get along with his fellow harbingers, or with the Fatui much at all. Built around deceit and almost anything but heavy combat, he seems to disagree with their hands-off approach, instead preferring to apply a more physical angle to their activities, making him an incredibly worthwhile character to take onto the battlefield - the place he belongs.

Tartaglia can be obtained through wishing on the character banner. He debuted on his own Character Banner, Farewell of Snezhaya.

  • Element: Hydro
  • Weapon Type: Bow (Adaptive)
  • Rarity: 5-Star

Should you pull Tartaglia from the Farewell to Snezhnaya banner in November, you’ll gain access to a ruthless warrior capable of impressive features of Elemental control. He possesses the unique ability to be both a ranged and melee-class adventurer, able to switch almost on-demand so long as his Elemental Skill is off cooldown, it allows him to trigger two different effects through his Normal Attacks and Elemental Burst, opening up fluid on-the-fly combat strategies to suit the situation.

He’s an adaptive character that will take lots of quick decisions and micro-management to properly utilize, making Tartaglia one of the more advanced characters on the roster right now.

Tartaglia Talents and Recommended Skill Upgrade Priorities

Tartaglia's whole kit revolves around the usage of your elemental skill. Being able to master the intricacies of this skill is going to be crucial if you want to play Tartaglia optimally.

TypeNameEffect
Normal/Charged AttackCutting TorrentTap: 6-shot non-elemental Bow attack (6-hit Hydro strike in Melee Stance)

Hold: Aimed Shot dealing Hydro damage and applying Riptide to the target. The next Aimed Shot against a target afflicted with Riptide deals AoE DMG and, when defeated with Riptide in effect, will pass Riptide onto nearby enemies. Damage inflicted by Tartaglia to enemies afflicted with Riptide counts as Normal Attack DMG.

  • In Melee Stance: Deals Hydro DMG or AoE Hydro DMG against a target affected by Riptide. Damage dealt this way counts as Elemental Skill DMG and can only be triggered every 1.5s.

Plunge: Deals non-elemental AoE DMG. Cannot be used in Melee stance.

Elemental SkillFoul Legacy: Raging TideDeals Hydro DMG to nearby enemies and puts Tartaglia into a Melee Stance, altering his Normal and Charged Attacks.

The CD of this skill increases the longer it's in effect and automatically ends after 30s, incurring the largest CD time.

Elemental BurstHavoc: ObliterationIn Ranged Stance: Fires an elementally-attuned arrow forward dealing AoE Hydro DMG and applying Riptide. A portion of the Energy spent is refunded after use.

In Melee Stance: Deals massive Hydro DMG to surrounding enemies. Those afflicted with Riptide explode for AoE Hydro DMG that is considered Elemental Burst DMG.

Passive Talent #1 (Character Ascension 1)Never EndingExtends the duration of Riptide on any enemy by 8s.
Passive Talent #2 (Character Ascension 2)Sword of TorrentsTartaglia can now inflict Riptide in melee stance when landing a CRIT.
Passive Talent #3 (automatically unlocked)Master of WeaponryIncreases your own party member's Normal Attack level by 1.

Since elemental skill will be where much of your damage as a main DPS will come from, the recommended skill priority for Tartaglia would be:

  • Elemental Skill
  • Normal Attack and Elemental Burst

Prioritize elemental skill first and you can keep normal attack and elemental burst at the same level.

There's also a sub DPS build for Tartaglia that follows this skill priority:

  • Elemental Burst
  • Elemental Skill
  • Normal Attack

Tartaglia Constellations

Tartaglia, being a 5-star character, may give you problems obtaining his constellations. Luckily, it seems that MiHoyo likes doing reruns of his banner. The constellations to keep an eye on are C1, C3, C4, and C6.

NameEffect
Foul Legacy: Tide WithholderThe CD of Foul Legacy: Raging Tide is reduced by 20%.
Foul Legacy: UnderstreamDefeating opponents affect by Riptide generates 4 Elemental Energy.
Abyssal Mayhem: Vortex of TurmoilIncreases the Level of Foul Legacy: Raging Tide by 3.
Abyssal Mayhem: HydrosproutThe Riptide effects of Tartaglia's current stance are triggered automatically every 4s and do not adhere to or incur the usual time delay interval.
Havoc: Formless BladeIncreases the level of Havoc: Obliteration by 3.
Havoc: AnnihilationWhen Havoc: Obliteration is cast in Melee stance, the CD of Foul Legacy: Raging Tide is reset once Tartaglia returns to Ranged Stance.

Tartaglia can be built as either a sub DPS or a main DPS depending on what you need in your team. As a main DPS, one of the things you need to master is the cooldown of his elemental skill. If you want to get down to specifics, a Redditor made a table laying out all the possible cooldowns.

As a sub DPS, you'll still play him as you'd normally do. However, this time his elemental burst takes higher priority. The chart above can be ignored as you wouldn't have Tartaglia in the field for long anyway. The common strategy is to apply riptide with his elemental skill, use his elemental burst (melee), and switch back to the main DPS.

Best Weapons for Tartaglia

Tartaglia benefits from bows with the ATK sub stat and here are some of the best bows for that:

Weapon NameIn-Game Description
Skyward HarpIncreases CRIT DMG by 20~40%. Hits have a 60~100% chance to inflict a small AoE attack, dealing 125% Physical ATK DMG. Can only occur once every 4~2s.
RustIncreases Normal Attack DMG by 40~80% but decreases Charged Attack DMG by 10%.
Amos’s BowIncreases Normal Attack and Charged Attack DMG by 12~24%. After a Normal or Charged Attack is fired, DMG dealt increases by a further 8~16% every 0.1 seconds up to 5 times.
Favonius WarbowWindfall CRIT hits have a 60~100% chance to generate 1 Elemental Orb, which will regenerate 6 Energy for the character. Can only occur once every 12~6s.
Elegy for the EndA part of the "Millennial Movement" that wanders amidst the winds. Increases Elemental Mastery by 60~120. When the Elemental Skills or Elemental Bursts of the character wielding this weapon hit opponents, that character gains a Sigil of Remembrance. This effect can be triggered once every 0.2s and can be triggered even if said character is not on the field. When you possess 4 Sigils of Remembrance, all of them will be consumed and all nearby party members will obtain the "Millennial Movement: Farewell Song" effect for 12s. "Millennial Movement: Farewell Song" increases Elemental Mastery by 100~200 and increases ATK by 20~40%.Once this effect is triggered, you will not gain Sigils of Remembrance for 20s. Of the many effects of the "Millennial Movement," buffs of the same type will not stack.
The StringlessIncreases Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst DMG by 24~48%.

Skyward Harp is by far the best bow for Tartaglia, followed by Rust. Amos’s bow is also up there. We'd recommend Favonius Warbow for sub DPS Tartaglia build. Elegy for the End is an interesting bow to use with Tartaglia because this puts him in a very supportive role. Same with The Stringless — it’s an ultra-budget bow but will do if you don’t have Skyward Harp, Rust, or Amos’s Bow.

Best Artifacts for Tartaglia

For artifacts, there's only two that we'd recommend for Tartaglia:

Artifact NameIn-Game Description
Noblesse Oblige
  • 2-piece effect: Elemental Burst DMG +20%
  • 4-piece effect: Using an Elemental Burst increase all party members' ATK by 20% for 12s. This effect cannot stack.
Heart of Depth
  • 2-piece effect: Hydro DMG Bonus +15%
  • 4-piece effect: After using Elemental Skill, increases Normal Attack and Charged Attack DMG by 30% for 15s.

Heart of Depth is the artifact to go for if you're using Childe as a main DPS character. If you’re going for a sub DPS build, I suggest 2 pieces of Heart of Depth and 2 pieces of Noblesse Oblige for that sweet, sweet burst damage.

These are the main stats to look out for:

  • ATK% Sands
  • Hydro DMG% Goblet
  • Crit Rate/Crit DMG Circlet (depending on your crit rate and crit dmg ratio)

The best Crit Rate to Crit DMG ratio is 1:2. This means that if you have 50% Crit Rate, you should have 100% Crit DMG.

For sub stats, here's what to look out for:

  • ATK
  • Crit DMG
  • Crit Rate
