Yes, there are many things in my house that have designs of flowers. These are cups, ceramic plates, bed-sheets, curtains, etc.

(a) I can recognise rose and jasmine flowers by their scent.

(b) Sadabaharand rose plants flowers bloom all the year round.

(c) Marigold and tulip flowers bloom only in certain months.

(d) Yes, there are some trees or plants which never have any flowers. For example: Money plant.

Why this?

(a) Have you ever seen a board like this put up anywhere?

(b) Do people pluck flowers even when this board is there?

(c) Why do you think they do this?

(d) Should they do this?

(e) What would happen if everybody plucked flowers?

Answer.

(a) Yes, I have seen boards like this put up in parks and gardens.

(b) Yes, some people still pluck flowers even when such a board is there.

(c) They do this because they do not obey the rules and get fun in plucking the flowers.

(d) No, people should not pluck flowers.

(e) If everybody plucks flowers, there would be no flowers all around which means there would be no beauty and no colours there.

Let us look closely

Children who can bring flowers may bring one or two flowers to class. Remember that you must collect only fallen flowers. Do not pluck any flower. Make groups of three or four children and look at one flower carefully—

(a) What is the colour of the flower?

(b) What kind of a scent does it have?

(c) What does it look like – a bell, a bowl, a brush or anything else?

(d) Do these flowers grow in bunches?

(e)How many petals does it have?

(f) Are all the petals joined together or separate?

(g) Outside the petals, can you see any green leafy structure? How many are there?

(h) Inside the petals, in the middle of the flower, can you see some thin structures? Write its colour.

(i) When you touch these, do you find a powdery thing on your hands?

Answer.

Students can pick any flower of their choice and answer the above questions about that flower.

We have picked a rose flower.

(a) It is red in colour.

(b) It has a very pleasant scent.

(c) It looks like a bowl.

(d) No, roses do not grow in bunches.

(e) It has about 20 to 40 petals.

(f) petals are separate.

(g) Yes, there are five green leafy structures.

(h) Yes, I can see the thin structures in the middle of the rose flower. It is yellowish in colour.

(i) Yes, I get a powdery thing on my hands.

Blooming buds!

1. What differences do you find between a flower and a bud?

Answer.

Bud is small and pointed structure which develops into a flower. A flower is large and spread.

2. Draw the picture of a bud and its flower in your notebook.

Flowers are even eaten!

1. Are flowers cooked in your home as a dry vegetable, a gravy dish or as a ‘chutney? Find out which flowers are used for these?

Answer.

Yes, flowers of some plants are cooked in our home as a dry vegetable, a gravy dish or as chutney. Flowers of banana, sahjan, kachnar, etc. are used for making dry vegetables and gravy dishes whereas flowers of Shefalika are used for making chutney.

2. Find out names of any two flowers which are used for making medicines?

Answer.

Two flowers that are used for making medicines are rose and sunflower.

3. How is rose water used in your house? Is it used as medicine, sweets,lassior something else? Find out and tell others.

Answer.

Rose water is used as eye drops and skin toner. It is also added in sweets and lassi for flavour.

Colours from flowers

(a) Find out and write the names of some more flowers that are used for making colours.

(b) Can you think of a colour of which there is no flower?

(c) Write the names of such flowers which are used to make scents.

(a) Marigold, hibiscus, Rose and bluebell flowers are used for making colours.

(b) I think there are no flowers of silver or grey colour.

(c) Jasmine, lily and rose flowers are used to make scents.

(a) Do you know when such songs are sung?

(b) Do you or anybody else at home know other such songs? Collect songs, poems, etc., on flowers. Write them down and put them up in the classroom.

(c) Are any special flowers used on certain occasions by your elders? Make a list of different occasions and the flowers used at each.

They sell rose, jasmine and dahlia.

2. Where do they bring these flowers from?

Answer.

They bring these flowers from gardens or horticulture farms.

3. Why do people buy flowers?

Answer.

People buy flowers for different purposes like for decoration, to worship god or to gift to others.

4. In what forms do flower sellers sell their flowers? Look at these pictures. Tick against those forms that you have seen.
