Let us look closely

Children who can bring flowers may bring one or two flowers to class. Remember that you must collect only fallen flowers. Do not pluck any flower. Make groups of three or four children and look at one flower carefully—

(a) What is the colour of the flower?

(b) What kind of a scent does it have?

(c) What does it look like – a bell, a bowl, a brush or anything else?

(d) Do these flowers grow in bunches?

(e)How many petals does it have?

(f) Are all the petals joined together or separate?

(g) Outside the petals, can you see any green leafy structure? How many are there?

(h) Inside the petals, in the middle of the flower, can you see some thin structures? Write its colour.

(i) When you touch these, do you find a powdery thing on your hands?

Students can pick any flower of their choice and answer the above questions about that flower.

Bud is small and pointed structure which develops into a flower. A flower is large and spread.

Flowers are even eaten!

1. Are flowers cooked in your home as a dry vegetable, a gravy dish or as a ‘chutney? Find out which flowers are used for these?

Answer.

Yes, flowers of some plants are cooked in our home as a dry vegetable, a gravy dish or as chutney. Flowers of banana, sahjan, kachnar, etc. are used for making dry vegetables and gravy dishes whereas flowers of Shefalika are used for making chutney.

2. Find out names of any two flowers which are used for making medicines?

Answer.

Two flowers that are used for making medicines are rose and sunflower.

3. How is rose water used in your house? Is it used as medicine, sweets,lassior something else? Find out and tell others.

Answer.

Rose water is used as eye drops and skin toner. It is also added in sweets and lassi for flavour.
