LED stock ticker displays work by receiving real-time financial data from a feed or software, and then displaying the information as scrolling text through small LED lights on an electronic board or screen. Check out our Learning Center for more information on the ticker hardware & software used.

LED tickers are a fantastic way to display all kinds of information. The classic look of text scrolling on an LED ticker tape can bring even the dullest room to life while at the same time displaying all manner of information such as stock prices, the latest news, sports news, RSS feeds and even twitter feeds!

Ticker symbols aren't static and can change in the event of a merger, name change, or delisting.

Usually, a company can pick its own ticker symbol. If it already exists, they must choose another one. If they don't pick one, the exchange will assign them a symbol. The ticker symbol is usually representative of the company's name, for example, AMZN for Amazon or MSFT for Microsoft.

The ticker may include the trading volume, showing the number of shares traded during a specific period and the time of the last trade, providing real-time or near-real-time information on stock moves. Some tickers also display up or down arrows to signify the direction of the stock prices.

Stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange have symbols with up to three letters - like T (AT&T), DO (Diamond Offshore Drilling) and LUV (Southwest Airlines). Stocks traded on the NASDAQ usually have four-letter symbols - like MSFT (Microsoft).

Sometimes, an additional fifth letter is included after the four-letter ticker to signify something about the stock or company. This fifth letter will typically follow a period ("."). For example, a fifth letter "Q" indicates bankruptcy proceedings, while a "K" specified non-voting shares.

Stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) can have four or fewer letters. Nasdaq-listed securities can have up to five characters. It is decided by the company. The letters that are chosen most often (but not always) represent the closest abbreviation of the company. Sometimes a company's first choice for a ticker symbol doesn't work out, because the ticker they had in mind has already been taken by another company who got there first.

Companies can sometimes pick their own ticker symbol if the abbreviation they chose is not already listed on their exchange. The exchange may also assign a symbol to a company.
