Jobs with a lot of downtime: 5 jobs that provide more free time during the day, so you can side hustle, study, and enjoy life more.

Some people view jobs with a lot of downtime as lazy.

This is because work culture tends to glorify working hard.

They think it’s admirable to overwork yourself and waste your best years to make someone else rich. As if!

In truth, hard work is only admirable when an ownership stake is available.

Otherwise, it’s better to work smart than to work hard.

In this post, I will show you 5 jobs with a lot of downtime so that you have extra time to work on your side hustle and enjoy more of life.

Let’s dive in.

Jobs With A Lot Of Downtime

Chat Specialist

One of the easiest jobs I’ve ever had was working for a bank as a chat specialist.

Simply put, a chat specialist is a customer service representative through chat.

Because you work a non-voice channel, you have more time to craft your responses. As such, it’s automatically easier than voice or in-person channels.

Best of all, a chat specialist job is the kind of job that provides a lot of downtime.

As long as you don’t have any other responsibilities, and if your employer is ok with it, you can listen to music, watch YouTube, or work on your side hustle when you don’t have chats.

Overnight Call Centre Jobs

A lot of people start their careers off in customer service.

Then, they constantly complain about it until they gain enough experience to get out.

Once they get to the next level, they become too busy to keep up with their own life.

Their day-to-day lives become exhausting and overwhelming.

Now their work day is non-stop. There’s no downtime at all.

In turn, they go right back to complaining about their job like before. Sometimes they’ll even reminisce about how easy it used to be in customer service.

The way I look at it—if you’re going to complain anyways, why not enjoy your day-to-day life more?

Why not keep jobs with a lot of downtime?

If you don’t care about status, the perfect way to get more downtime again is by going back to customer service.

And now that most customer service jobs can be done from home, a call centre job is an incredibly flexible career option.

If you are a night owl that wants more downtime, the perfect job is an overnight call centre job.

Basically, you get paid to just be there. Call-centres are usually slower over night, which results in a lot more downtime.

Security Guard

I’m sure you’ve heard people refer to security-guard jobs as a joke before.

People will call them condescending terms like “rent a cop,” because they are not real police officers.

But maybe security guards don’t care about status and the joke is on you.

Many security guards get to sit down all day and use their iPhones. Perhaps they’re trading stocks or reading a book they enjoy. Maybe they’re bloggers that were seeking jobs with a lot of downtime?

Meanwhile, you have demands thrown at you all day long.

You might think they are a joke and it’s possible that you think they are lazy.

But while you’re driving home exhausted after work in your car loan and your fancy suit, maybe they’re going home in a more relaxed state.

Maybe they actually have enough energy after work to do something meaningful.

High-Paying Part-time Jobs

If you’re looking for jobs with a lot of downtime, the ultimate option is working less days per week.

Rather than gaining a few extra hours of downtime per day, you gain extra days.

Personally, I switched to a part-time job in 2019 and I’ve never been happier.

I usually work 3 days per week now, which means I have a lot of extra downtime.

Simply put, I have the most free time I’ve had since college.

And I’ve used that free time to grow this blog. I usually work 3 days per week now on blogging and investing. I take one day off for myself.

It’s the perfect balance. My part-time job pays the bills, and my blog quenches my thirst for more fulfilling work.

Managers

It’s not always the case, but a lot of managers are lazy.

A lot of them rely on social skills and are less knowledgeable about the job than the staff they are in charge of.

When things get busy, they share a motivational message to employees and then watch them work instead of helping out.

Mostly, they sit around and talk amongst other managers all the time—tell me I’m wrong?

Frankly, I think a lot of managers are managers because they are delegators instead of workers. They got good at delegating because they don’t like to work.

So, if you’re a social person that is good at delegating, consider becoming a manager if you’re seeking jobs with a lot of downtime.

Jobs With A Lot Of Downtime – Final Thoughts

Don’t be fooled by the toxic work culture.

They will try to get you to trade status and a little more money for your time.

If status is what you want, by all means, keep climbing the corporate ladder.

But if it’s more downtime that you seek, you need to stop caring what other people think.

You can pursue a job with more downtime to have more time to work on your side hustle, to learn about other topics, or just to have more free time. There’s nothing wrong with that.
