I Watched Marie Kondo’s New Show On Netflix And It Literally Transformed My Life (2024)

Usually, "Netflix" and "productive" don't go in the same sentence. You know, unless that sentence is "I was planning on being productive, but then I just watched Netlfix all day." That's exactly why I now turn to Netflix whenever I want to chill, turn off my brain and be seriously entertained - so imagine my surprise when Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix actually inspired me to live my best life.

Now, I'll be honest, these types of reality TV shows aren't generally my cup of tea. I'm not interested in seeing other people getting life coached, because I usually can't (or don't want to) apply that life coaching to myself. But I'd heard of Marie Kondo and her famous "if it doesn't spark joy, toss it" tehcnique before, so I decided to give the show a shot.

First of all, a little context: Marie Kondo is a professional organizer from Japan, with two hit books under her belt: Spark Joy and The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Her Netflix Show, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, follows Marie as she enters into the homes of couples and helps them tidy their spaces, and also organize their lives.

Sounds like a basic premise, right?Sure, except something magical happens within this basic premise - and it's that everyone Marie Kondo touches just... improves. It's nuts.

Every episode starts with a couple in organizational (and sometimes, relationship) turmoil. But then Marie Kondo comes in and everythig changes. She applies her KonMari organizational method to their stuff, which makes you organize things by type ("paper", "clothes", etc) rather than by room.

She teaches people how to fold their clothes so they stand up in a drawer; how to find which items spark joy; what to do with their papers, books and items of sentimental value - and a whole bunch of other tips. By the end of the episodes, the couple's houses are a testament to organization - and their relaitonships greatly improve, too. Honestly, the process is just so satisfying to watch, and Marie Kondo is such a genuine and fun person that she totally hooks you into the show.

After watching three episodes of people organizing their spaces and their lives thanks to Marie Kondo and the KonMari method, and justfeelingthe good vibes through the television, I decided to do something I hadn't done in three years. I decided to clean and organize my room. For reference, this is the disaster I'd been living in:

There are a lot of reasons why my bedroomgot to be so unlivable - but one of the big ones was that, at a certain point, I just got way too overwhelmed to even attempt to clean and organize it. I live with my parents so there isn't that much space for all my stuff, which meant my bedroom just turned into a disorganized storage room with a bed and a television; and although I wasn't happy with that, I had zero motivation to change the situation.

Until I saw Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.Just seeing how much more at peace ALL of Marie Kondo's clients were, and seeing how simple the KonMari method was, I decided to give it a shot. And guys, no lie, in the span of one weekend I had a totally transformed bedroom. No, scratch that: I had aliving spaceagain.

I literally just copied what I saw Marie Kondo do on the show, starting with organizing my clothes, then paper, and continuing down the checklist until everything was organized and put away properly. I kept the show on in the background for inspiration, and even though the process was long and tedius (but not difficult), I knew the outcome would be something awesome.

Honestly, I was never expecting a Netflix showto inspire me to the point of actually tackling - and successfully cleaning! - my disaster of a bedroom. But here we are. It's 2019. Wild things are happening. I'm living for it.

So go ahead and pop on Tidying Up With Marie Kondo if you're bored, stressed, or need some serious inspiration. It just might make your entire life, tbh.
