How to Remove Plumeria Flowers From Stems (2024)

The sweet perfume of blooming plumerias (Plumeria spp.) emanates from the white, pink, red or yellow flowers. Plumeria grows as a deciduous or evergreen tree or shrub in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 through 12. These flowers are traditionally used to make the Hawaiian lei, which requires removal of the flowers from the stem without damaging the petals. Flowers also provide an attractive arrangement floating in bowls of water or spread on a table around a larger arrangement.

  1. 1.

Select plumeria blooms that have just opened. Only pick those with healthy petals and no signs of damage or wilt. Pick the blossoms in the morning after any moisture on the petals has dried but before the heat of the day causes them to wilt.

  2. 2.

Place your fingers around the blossoms so the tips of your fingers surround the stem and the blossom is held loosely in your hand. Pull the flower gently away from the stem so it separates without damage to the petals.

  3. 3.

Place the flowers flat in a container as you collect the blooms. Keep the flowers in a shaded area until you are done picking so they don't wilt.

  4. 4.

Store the plumeria flowers at 48 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit in a plastic bag for up to three days or until you are ready to use them.
