To celebrate summer coming, I have this adorable whipped soap recipe made from melt and pour soap in a fun mermaid theme. I've also teamed with with eight other bloggers to bring you summer themed DIY recipes, so check those out at the bottom of the post.

I've been wanting a good whipped, fluffy soap for a while. My son has sensory issues, and he likes to play with putty and playdoh, so I thought he'd like it. My daughter loves slime, so I knew she would love it too.

You can buy a foaming bath whip, but I will be honest in that I do not need more supplies. I have an insane amount of supplies, so I wanted to use what I had to make a foaming soap instead of buying something new.

I tested some ways to make a whipped soap from melt and pour soap, and I found a winner.

This makes a base recipe for whipped soap, and it's a great one. I didn't add much extra to it, but I will be playing with a little more to see what additives also work in it.

I will also mention that I made this in high humidity when my house was 85 degrees, so it was pretty hot. This whipped mermaid soap has held its shape and didn't fail even in the heat and humidity, so I feel pretty confident that this will work in all conditions.

Whipped soap feels like shaving cream, and it's super light and fluffy. It's great to use on its own as a fun soap for kids (of any age) or to use as a shaving soap. Try this whipped shave butter that lathers, which is similar to this whipped soap.

You can also use it to make sugar scrubs, bath parfaits, shaving butter, and more fun ideas. I can't tell you how many DIY bath and body recipes I've seen that call for whipped soap, and now I can make them.

You can make whipped soap from a base. I recommend Soap Expressions Whipped Soap Base or Stephenson's Foaming Bath Butter.

This made enough to fill three 4-ounce jars. You may get more or less depending on how fluffy yours is. Mine fell a little when I was adding the mica by hand, so you may get more if you make it solid colored.

I wanted mermaid whipped soap, but you can make yours any color. I really like purple, green, and blue together, so that's what I used.

MELT AND POUR SOAP

I use Crafty Bubbles melt and pour soap to make my whipped soap from melt and pour soap. For this recipe, I used the white soap base. It's not available on Amazon, so you'll have to order from their website.

Any white melt and pour soap should work, but I haven't tested them.

GRAPESEED OIL

I chose grapeseed oil because it's a light oil, and it soaks into your skin quickly. Even though I have dry skin, I still wanted something that wouldn't leave my feeling oily. I have by solid lotions and oils to hydrate my skin.

You could use any carrier oil in this recipe. Other good oils to use would be sunflower oil, sweet almond oil, or almond oil since they are all lighter oils.

WATER

I used distilled water. If you don't have any, I recommend boiling water and letting it cool before using it to kill bugs. Even with a preservative, you need to be careful.

PRESERVATIVE

You can add many additives to melt and pour soap and even some water, but this is a lot of water. You will need a preservative for this recipe or you could have fungi or bacteria growing.

I'm definitely drawn to natural products, but I don't trust any natural preservatives when adding this much water to a recipe. Please do your own research and keep you and your family safe.

I used methylparaben. Yes, it is a paraben, but I believe that benefits outweigh the risks.

MICA

I used mica to color my whipped soap from melt and pour. I didn't want to add liquid and risk having the soap fall.

ESSENTIAL OILS

You can use any essential oil or fragrance oil in this recipe. I recommend using around 3 grams, but usually less.

I chose a natural blueberry fragrance oil from Crafty Bubbles and a vanilla essential oil to make a blueberry cupcake scent. The blueberry is really strong, so I used about half of what I normally would use.

INGREDIENTS

35 grams melt and pour soap plus 1-2 ounces to make the embeds
10 grams grapeseed oil
52 grams distilled water
Preservative (phenonip is a good one)
Mica
3 grams or less essential oils (I used blueberry natural fragrance oil and vanilla essential oil)
Mermaid tail mold

DIRECTIONS

STEP #1

Start by making the mermaid tails or other embeds to add to the top. This step is optional.
I melted enough soap to fill 6 of the cavities on my mold, so this will vary based on your mold. Let them set up and harden.

STEP #2

Use a digital scale to measure the soap and put it in a medium sized microwave safe bowl. Measure the water, oil, and preservative and put in another smaller bowl or measuring cup.

STEP #3

Melt the soap in the microwave. Mine took about 20 seconds.

STEP #4

Slowly pour the water and oil mixture into the melted soap while you mix with a hand mixer. You want to pour very slowly so it has time to whip.

At this point, I thought that this had failed. It was a foam and nothing like I wanted. Remember, it was 85 degrees in my kitchen, so I set it in the fridge for 5 minutes and started whipping again. This time it whipped beautifully.

Add the essential oils. Keep whipping until it looks like shaving cream. This took about 3-4 minutes after putting it in the fridge.

STEP #5

Separate into three bowls to make three different colors. If you are making it all one color, you can leave it in one bowl.

I added green, blue, and purple for mermaid colors.
Add the mica to color. I used a spoon to mix it, and the soap fell a little. I'm still very happy with the texture, so it's okay.

STEP #6

I wanted a mermaid look with three different colors, so I used a piping bag with a large star tip to pipe it into the jars.

To mix the colors, I opened the bag and put one color on the bottom third of the bag, the next color on top, and the last color on top. Try to get the color as far down to the tip as you can.

STEP #7

Pipe the whipped soap recipe into jars. The colors will mix together, creating a beautiful mermaid color.

STEP #8

Tip with candy sprinkles if desired and set your soap embeds on top for a cute look.

And now you know how to make whipped soap from melt and pour soap! This fun soap can be used a regular soap, and it also makes a great soap to shave your legs with because it's thick and fluffy.

This is a great gift idea for kids because of the texture. Mine may have used some for sensory play and didn't even use it for soap.
