Yun Jin is a new Geo character in Genshin Impact’s roster. She was released in Version 2.4, along with the Cryo Vision holder, Shenhe. Both units excel in the supportive role, but they have a very niche utility, especially when compared to older Genshin Impact characters like Bennett. The Pyro lad can be used in almost every composition, where his ATK buff always comes in handy.

As a limited support, players naturally have to understand the character’s mechanics to fully utilize them. When using Yun Jin, here are some of the most common mistakes made by the player base.

8 Not Knowing How Her Buff Works

Yun Jin is a support for DPS that relies on Normal Attacks. The opera artist will boost their damage if the unit is affected by her Flying Cloud Flag Formation, a buff created via Yun Jin’s Elemental Burst. For the next 12s after cast, the DPS’s hits will deal higher damage, up to 30 triggers.

Therefore, when pairing Yun Jin with a DPS, players have to ensure that they’re not using units that rely on other forms of attacks. For example, Xiao is not a good pair with Yun Jin as he focuses on Plunging Attack. Ganyu is also a poor companion as she’s a Charged Attack beast.

7 Using Damage Build

Yun Jin’s damage increases scales with DEF stat. So the best way to maximize this is by stacking as much DEF as possible. Nevertheless, some people may opt for damage build anyway.

To build her as a main DPS, ATK/Physical/Crit is the sensible option. However, Yun Jin’s Skill and Burst scales with DEF, so they won’t benefit from it. Unfortunately, she also has a low base ATK, so building her on ATK isn’t that good either. If players opt to use her as a Sub-DPS with DEF/Geo/Crit, they’ll soon find that her damage dealing is really slow. For instance, her Burst will only deal damage once every cast.

With all these things considered, it’s far from wise to build Yun Jin as a damage dealer. Instead, players should let her do what she does best; supporting Normal Attack DPS by stacking DEF.

6 Using Defender’s Will Artifact

Since Yun Jin relies on DEF for her buff, some people may consider using the 4-star Artifact set Defender’s Will. While it’s true that the 2-set effect is perfect for Yun Jin (+30% DEF), it’s important to remember that 4-star items have a lower overall stat as opposed to 5-star ones.

So even if players are using Defender’s Will on Flower and Plume, they’ll still find it underperforming compared to other options. Therefore, for Yun Jin, players should just stick with 4-Husk of Opulent Dreams.

5 Not Having Enough Energy Recharge

Yun Jin’s buff comes solely from her Elemental Burst, so players must ensure it’s always available. For this, they’ll need some Energy Recharge stat. Luckily, though, since she doesn’t need ATK or offensive stat, Travelers can easily opt for Energy Recharge weapons. For example, Engulfing Lightning, Skyward Spine, Favonius Lance, The Catch, and Prototype Starglitter.

Favonius Lance is an excellent option for team-wide Energy regeneration. However, as it’s not a free weapon, F2P players can use either Genshin Impact’s The Catch, or the craftable Polearm, Prototype Starglitter instead.

4 Using Her Tap Skill

Usually, when a character has a Tap and Hold version of their Elemental Skill, they will have a different cooldown duration. However, this does not apply to Yun Jin. Whether players use the Tap or Hold Skill, both will trigger a nine seconds cooldown.

Considering her Hold Skill has a higher damage multiplier, it’s better to take a split second to trigger the Charge Level 1 damage. However, if players want one extra Elemental Particle production, then they have to reach Charge Level 2, which may take two seconds to perform.

3 Underestimating Geo Resonance

Niche supports like Gorou and Shenhe in Genshin Impact highly promote mono-Element teams. But unlike them, Yun Jin’s buff is further increased if she’s a part of a multi-Element party. This means players can use a rainbow team without worry. For example, a combination of Eula, Yun Jin, and Raiden Shogun can be an amazing composition.

However, while having four Elements will maximize Yun Jin’s bonus damage, Geo Resonance is way too good to miss. So instead of adding another Vision to the previous team, a character like Zhongli is far more beneficial for the party.

2 Building Yun Jin On HP

When reading Yun Jin’s Elemental Skill description, players may gain the impression that she’s a shielder. Unfortunately, this is not true. Her Skill creates a temporary shield to parry the enemy’s attack. This shield will scale with HP, but since it’s only briefly there, Travelers should never focus on it.

In fact, Yun Jin is fully functional even if players completely ignore leveling up this talent. The opera singer’s Elemental Burst is the core of her kit, so always remember to build her on DEF instead of any other stat.

1 Using Dragon’s Bane

Yun Jin can be seen wielding a Dragon’s Bane Polearm in many of her official clips. This creates many concerns among the fanbase, where players keep asking whether the weapon is good for her or not. Fortunately, the answer is quite straightforward: No, Dragon’s Bane is not good for Yun Jin.

Usually, characters in Genshin Impact previews will feature a weapon that’s aesthetically pleasing to the character. While many argue that Dragon’s Bane doesn’t fit her well, it’s easy to say that the spear is negligible for Yun Jin. As for the technical answer, Dragon’s Bane grants Elemental Mastery sub-stat, which Yun Jin barely benefits from.

Genshin Impact is now available on Mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5. A Switch version is in development.
