Are Sempervivum slow growing? ›

The Sempervivum or houseleek is an intriguing, low-growing, mat-forming, succulent plant. It is evergreen and forms rosette-shaped plants in greens, reds and yellow – almost resembling little roses.

In the ground, Sempervivum tolerate even very poor soils but will grow faster and bigger if a bit of good quality potting mix is mixed through the soil. In pots a good quality all rounder or succulent potting mix should be used. Never use garden soil in pots as this is likely to stunt the growth or kill your plants.

After four or five weeks, small rosettes should form where you have planted your seeds. You can now transfer your sempervivum plant into your garden.

Sempervivum plants generally only live for 3 years, so the plants have 2 productive years before they die. After 3 years and having produced many baby plants a Sempervivum grows a tall center stalk that blooms before the plant dies.

In summer, the combination of high temperatures and full sun exposure can cause sunburn for your succulents, damaging both the leaves and the root systems.

Sempervivum will tolerate frost, snow and ice but don't love heat. Echeveria don't mind some heat, but definitely can't handle extended freezing temperatures. Interestingly, both Echeverias and Sempervivums will thrive during spring and fall when temperatures are more temperate.
