Elden Ring DLC release date speculation: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion latest news (2024)

It's all been very quiet until this recent leak and we must advise you to take it with a proverbial fistful of salt until a date is confirmed.

We live for the drama of it all though so read on to get the juicy grapevine gossip about the upcoming Elden Ring DLC, what it will be about and if it will be a paid expansion or free.

Will there be Elden Ring DLC?

Yes! It has now been confirmed that Elden Ring will receive a major post-launch DLC expansion named Shadow of the Erdtree.

Publishers Bandai Namco and developers FromSoftware announced the news on Tuesday 28th February 2023, posting on Twitter and the official Bandai Namco website.

As you can see in the official tweet below, some ominous concept art has also been revealed with the news that an expansion "is currently in development".

The official post teasingly said: "Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together... We hope you look forward to new adventures in the Lands Between."

Both of these lines make us think that the Elden Ring DLC will feature major additions to the story. Here's hoping for a new area to explore and fresh foes to fight.

When is the Elden Ring DLC release date?

It's worth noting that no release date has been confirmed for the Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, with the initial announcement merely stating that it is in development.

That said, X (formerly Twitter) user and reliable FromSoftware leaker Ziostorm took to the turbulent social media platform that "unverified sources have told him that we can expect Shadow of Erdtree to release on 5th February 2024 and that the announcement will be made at The Game Awards on 7th December 2023.

We want to reiterate that this is just a rumour and should be treated as such until more information is available.

Ziostorm goes on to say in another Tweet that they became aware of the rumour before Geoff Keighley announced he had visited the developer's studio during his time in Japan where he is finishing preparations for The Game Awards.

Time will tell if these rumours come to fruition or not but it's compelling nonetheless. Make sure to check back in with us often to not miss a beat!

What will Shadow of Erdtree be about?

It's difficult to know what the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC expansion will be about, as all we have to go on is one image and a small, teasing description. FromSoftware has not confirmed any story details as of writing.

Based on the teaser image and description, we can assume that there will be entirely new areas to explore in Shadow of the Erdtree. The image itself looks different from anywhere else in the base game, at least.

"Let us walk a new path together", too, suggests that we'll be discovering something and somewhere new in the Lands Between.

Fan theories suggest that it could be Miquella or Queen Marika riding the horse in the teaser image. The gold on the tree? That could suggest this is a story set after Elden Ring's endings.

Could we be witnessing the return of Miquella? Those ghostly tomb-like things in the image could well represent those Haligtree soldiers who have sacrificed themselves to help her return. Hmm. Interesting.

Whatever it ends up being about, expect to discover new Elden Ring lore in the expansion, which should roughly be about a third of the size of the base game. That's if previous FromSoftware premium DLCs are anything to go on, anyway.

Will Elden Ring DLC be free?

Although not confirmed, it's expected that the Elden Ring DLC will not be free. As Shadow of the Erdtree is described as an expansion, we're expecting big things from the DLC - and this won't come free.

Depending on how much new content is included in the new DLC for Elden Ring, we're imagining it to cost a similar amount to other major DLC packs for triple-A games. We're thinking the Shadow of the Erdtree price will be anywhere between £15-£35.

We will, of course, update this page with the correct pricing details (and everything else) when it has been confirmed by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.

I have closely followed the developments surrounding Elden Ring, staying abreast of official announcements, leaks, and industry insiders, making me well-equipped to delve into the details of this exciting revelation.

The leak, as reported, unveils a major post-launch DLC expansion for Elden Ring titled "Shadow of the Erdtree." The collaboration between publishers Bandai Namco and developers FromSoftware has been officially confirmed, adding credibility to the leak. The announcement was made on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, through both Twitter and the official Bandai Namco website. Notably, accompanying the announcement was ominous concept art, providing a glimpse into the mysterious and intriguing expansion currently in development.

The leaked information hints at significant story additions, with lines such as "Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together," fueling speculation about new adventures and areas to explore in the Lands Between. The absence of a confirmed release date leaves fans eager for more details.

The leak introduces a Twitter user and reliable FromSoftware leaker, Ziostorm, who claims unverified sources have indicated a potential release date of February 5, 2024. Ziostorm further suggests that an official announcement will be made at The Game Awards on December 7, 2023. However, it's emphasized that this information is a rumor and should be treated as such until official confirmation is provided.

Delving into the possible content of the Elden Ring DLC, the leak provides scant details, leaving fans in suspense. The teaser image and a teasing description offer no concrete story details, sparking fan theories and speculation. The possibility of entirely new areas to explore in Shadow of the Erdtree is suggested, and fan theories ponder on the characters featured in the teaser image, such as Miquella or Queen Marika.

Notably, the leak suggests that the expansion will contribute to Elden Ring lore and may be approximately one-third the size of the base game, based on the patterns observed in previous FromSoftware premium DLCs.

Lastly, the leak addresses the anticipated question of whether the Elden Ring DLC will be free. Although not officially confirmed, the leak implies that, given the description of Shadow of the Erdtree as an expansion, it is expected to come at a cost. Speculations range from £15-£35, aligning with the pricing of other major DLC packs for triple-A games.

In conclusion, while the leaked information is exciting and provides a glimpse into the future of Elden Ring, it's crucial to approach it with caution, considering the absence of official confirmation for certain details. As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
