DIY Cleaning Products

They make seem like a pain to make but DIY cleaning products are super simple to throw together. I use a DIY floor cleaner, carpet cleaner, all purpose cleaner and bathroom cleaner.

They take me just a couple of minutes to make and I will make a big batch all at once that will last me for the entire month.

The average cost of a store bought cleaner is $6. If you go through 4 different kinds a month that is a total of $288 per year!

Most of the cleaners in this List of DIY Cleaners only use vinegar, water, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda. They cost pennies to make!

Average savings: $300/year

Drying Rack

I use a drying rack to keep my clothes in the best shape possible but it is also a great eco-friendly product to save money.

If you use your dryer sparingly or only during the winter, you can save as much as $85 per month on your energy costs.

I really only dry my towels in the dryer and hang up all of our clothes on a drying rack in my house. If it is a nice sunny day, then just move the racks outside to dry faster.

Average savings: $85/month

Reusable K Cups

I love K cups but they can be such a waste! We actually use the reusable K cups in my house and it saves us so much money!

The average cost of a K cup is $1. I can easily find a bag of ground coffee for less than $3 and get on average around 15 cups of coffee per bag. That comes out to 20 cents per cup!

Depending on how much coffee you drink every day, that is a considerable savings! It only takes a few seconds to fill up the reusable K cup and produces so much less waste.

Average savings: $500+/year

Power Strip

Use a power strip to plug in your lamps, TV, laptop, printer, etc. So many of these products still use energy when they are plugged in. Even when they are turned off!

A simple fix is to just switch the power strip off before you leave the room to prevent these items from using up energy.

Depending on how many items you have plugged in, this can save you $100’s per year.

Average Savings: $100/year

Reusable Storage Bags

My daughter will be in Kindergarten next year so I know will will be going through a lot of sandwich bags in her lunch box.

I bought some reusable storage bags to use instead to cut back on waste. They come in different sizes so you can grab some in a sandwich or snack sizes.

Even better, most can be washed in the washing machine with a load of clothes.

Average Savings: $25+/ year

LEDLight bulbs

One of my favorites of the eco-friendly products that will save you money! This is such a simple fix and a great way to save money. Change out all of your incandescent bulbs for LED light bulbs.

Change them in your lamps, outdoor lights, chandeliers, vanities, everywhere! Just by switching out five bulbs can save you $70 per year in energy costs.

The LED bulbs also last longer so you won’t have to change them as often and buy replacements.

Average Savings: $70+/year

“How Can I be Eco-Friendly and Save Money?”

Visit the Library

The average family spends around $120/year on reading materials. I think my family spends way more than that!

Instead of buying new books, magazine subscriptions or newspapers, you can just get everything you need at the local library.

There are so many ways the library can save you money, not just with reading materials but movies and music as well!

Average savings: $120/year

Water Filter

Instead of buying bottled water, use a water filter! You can purchase a water pitcher to keep in the fridge or use the filter that is installed in your refrigerator.

This cuts down on so much plastic waste and can save you $100 or more a year!

Average Savings: $100/year

Low Flow Shower Head

One of the other eco-friendly products that can save you money is a low flow shower head. You can install a low flow shower head to save on both your water and electricity bill. The averages savings is around $32 per person in your household.

So for a family of four, that is a savings of around $100 per year, even more if your water is heated with electricity.

Average Savings: $100/year

Programmable Thermostat

Save on your heating and cooling costs with a programmable thermostat. The average household spends around $2,000/year on heating and cooling their home.

You can save 1% of that cost for every degree you lower or raise your thermostat. This will vary depending on where you live, but the average cost of using a programmable thermostat is $300/year.
