Don't Starve Together is a fantastic title to play with friends, requiring gamers to work together to survive the harsh worlds that they're ushered into. It's fun and engaging but definitely quite difficult, with many players finding themselves six feet under before the first Winter ever sets in. There are many things that survivors need to do in order to prep for the harsh realities of Don't Starve Together and one of the most important aspects is securing a solid food supply.

There are many ways to collect food in Don't Starve Together but one of the easiest and least dangerous is to start a farm. Developers introduced farming via the Reap What You Sow update, giving players new and better ways to create sustainable food sources to hopefully last them through the Winter and allow them to focus on other aspects of survival. But those that want a farm will need some specific tools, like the Garden Hoe. Here's how players can craft their own and what it does.

Farm Soil

The Garden Hoe is one of the most important aspects of creating usable farmland in Don't Starve Together. Players that want to get their hands on one will first need to go through the process of creating a Science Machine. This can be a breeze, or supremely frustrating, depending on where players spawn and what their surroundings look like. In order to build a Science Machine, survivors will need to find four Logs, four Rocks, and one Gold Nugget. Logs and Rocks are pretty commonplace, but the Gold Nugget will need to be mined for (or luckily found) by striking a boulder with a vein through the side of it.

Unfortunately, the only way to mine for a Gold Nugget is to first have a Pickaxe, which requires players to locate and piece together two pieces of Flint and two Twigs. Flint can be found scattered on the ground and is arguably the most important component when players first drop into a new Don't Starve Together world. Once players have managed to construct their Pickaxe and snag themselves a Gold Nugget (or be lucky enough to find one lying around) they can piece together the ever-important Science Machine.

After building the Science Machine, players will gain access to new recipes when standing near it. One of these is the Garden Hoe, and it requires two Twigs and two Flint to craft.

What Does The Garden Hoe Do?

The Garden Hoe is required for players who want to plant seeds, but they'll first need to transform normal ground tiles into useable Farm Soil. To do this, they need to build a Garden Digamajig. They can be constructed with three Boards, two Rope, and two Flint. After constructed, players can use the Garden Digamajig (up to four times before it breaks) to turn tiles into Farm Soil. Once the ground has been transformed into Farm Soil, it can then be tilled with the Garden Hoe so players can plant seeds. The Garden Hoe will have 25 uses when players first craft it.

Those that want a Garden Hoe with a bit more durability can opt for the Splendid Garden Hoe, which can be made once players have access to the Alchemy Machine. It requires four Twigs and two Gold Nuggets to produce and has approximately four times the durability of its counterpart (100 uses).
