Dianthus – Easy, Fragrant and Colorful

The dianthus is one of the most popular flowers in the world. Dianthus flowers come in many colors, including white, pink, red and purple. They’re also available in a variety of sizes and shapes, making them suitable for various garden designs.

Originally native to the Mediterranean area but now found across the world, carnation flowers are so special that they appear in various places outside the garden. Whether being given as gifts by Korean children to celebrate Parents’ Day in May or as a corsage at American proms, the carnation is a flower with many meanings and uses.

Carnations are very easy to grow, making them an ideal flower for the novice or master gardener alike. You can choose to make a great border from them or add them to pots and containers. They prefer full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. Aim for an area that gets at least four to six hours of sunshine daily. Carnations need well-drained soil and should be watered regularly.

Dianthus (carnations) are wildly fragrant while offering single or double blooms from spring to summer. The plant can grow from six to 36 inches tall and four to 18 inches wide, so be aware of the variety you have and prune as you see fit.
