Dark of the Moon (2007)

Dark of the Moon is the first story following Virgil Flowers and is working for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Virgil displays all of the noble virtues attributed to the perfect Roman. He represents reason and wisdom, making him the perfect guide. As the journey progresses, his treatment of Dante changes, depending on the situation. Often and most importantly, Virgil is very protective of Dante.

Virgil has long blond hair and is obviously good-looking. He typically wears jeans and a T-shirt advertising an obscure rock band, seemingly a different one every day. Women are drawn to him, and he manages to fall in love with a beautiful young woman on just about every case.

Virgil (born October 15, 70 bce, Andes, near Mantua [Italy]—died September 21, 19 bce, Brundisium) was a Roman poet, best known for his national epic, the Aeneid (from c. 30 bce; unfinished at his death).

Virgil, the author of the Aeneid, is sent by Dante's first love, Beatrice, to guide Dante through Hell and Purgatory. Although Virgil is considered a noble and upright man, in the view of medieval Christianity, he is pagan and can therefore not accompany Dante to Paradise.

He meets her in #7 when investigating her for a scheme to age lumber in the river. In mid 30s, has 5 children by different fathers: Mateo, Tall Bear and Moses. The youngest is Sam.

In "Naked Prey" Lucas Davenport, married with a baby son, is now working for the governor as a troubleshooter. He is sent to a small Northern town in Minnesota after a black man and a white woman are found hanged in a field. The girl who found the two corpses, Letty West, is an independent, gusty character.

One idea which used to be commonplace in Dante criticism was that Virgil was a symbol of human reason (in this he contrasted with Beatrice, who symbolised faith). This idea rested largely on a passage in Purgatorio XVIII, where Virgil is about to explain how human beings are deserving of praise or blame.

The Prospect of Flowers, by Ruskin Bond, is the tale of Miss Mackenzie, an elderly single lady who lived alone in one of the picturesque hill stations of India.

Henry tracks down the letter writer, who turns out to be an elderly, taciturn taxidermist — also named Henry. The taxidermist shows Henry around his shop, and introduces him to two of the many stuffed animals in the store: Beatrice, an amiable-looking donkey, and Virgil, a monkey who is perched on her back.
