What is it? Cardiff Bay welcomes back the P1 Welsh Grand Prix of the Sea as part of the annual Harbour Festival. The Bay backdrop makes it an exhilarating experience for racers and spectators alike. Back on land, a whole host of comedic characters will bring Maritime mayhem to the bay. A highlight of the Cardiff Festival, expect nautical- themed street entertainers, a continental market and lots of family entertainment at Cardiff Bay Beach including an urban beach, shallow water play area and new exciting seaside rides.

What is it? Family friendly outdoor production of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, to be held on the castle lawns. Ideal for children aged five and over. It will go ahead whatever the weather.

3. Transport yourself back in time at Blaenavon rally

What is it? Hop aboard a vintage bus for a ride to Furnace Sidings where you will find a host of classical vehicles displayed in the arena. Don't forget the vintage steam train too.

4. You don't have to be mad but it helps at the Barking Mad Dog Show, Caerphilly

What is it? This is an annual fun dog show organised by animal charity Hope Rescue.

5. Go batty and learn how Bats are Beautiful, Rhayader

What is it? It is European Bat Weekend and local animal expert Sorcha Lewis will be on hand to show you how wonderful and exciting these little mammals are during an evening walk at Elan Village.

What is it? Last couple of days to enjoy the web installation in Cardiff's Bute Park. The impressive art installation involves self-adhesive tape wound around trees to create a giant spider’s web. You can find it at the park near the Castle Street entrance.

7. Take on the Wild Wales Cycling Challenge, Bala

What is it? The Wild Wales Challenge is a bike ride - with a difference. Held annually, on the bank Holiday Sunday at the end of August, it attracts over 500 cyclists, young, old, and not-so-young to Bala where the event starts and finishes. It is not a race, more of a challenge ride with the route changing every year.

What is it? Copperfest is a 3 day, free admission festival featuring the very best local Welsh and English language bands. It takes place on Amlwch, Isle of Anglesey. The festival is set a stones throw from the historical harbour of Porth Amlwch, in the North Eastern corner of Ynys Mon, under the shadow of Mynydd Parys, which was once one of the largest copper mines in the world.

What is it? Learn more about Wales' Ospreys and make something Osprey related to take home. Ask as many Osprey related questions as you like and the team at Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust at Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve will share their knowledge with you. 16. Take a step back in time at the Beaumaris Medieval Festival

What is it? Step back in time this August bank holiday weekend and enjoy a range of family-friendly activities – from a jester’s japes to fighting knights! At this year’s fun-filled festival you can join a knight school, take part in a squire training session, experience a spear drill or try your hand at archery. Children will enjoy taking part in the dragon land speed record race, whilst adults and families can learn about a wide range of historic crafts, listen to a storyteller or take a guided tour.

18. Take aim and have-a-go archery, Wrexham

What is it? Fancy yourself as a bit of a Robin Hood? Come and have a go at Chirk Castle with Bowbrook archery club - all ages and abilities welcome!

19. You don't have to run away to try circus workshops, Y Felinheli, Gwynedd

What is it? James from Syrcas Circus will be running a workshop where you can try out juggling, diablo, poi, stilt walking, uni-cycle and spinning plates. Elsewhere onsite at Greenwood Forest Park, jump aboard the worlds’ only people powered roller coaster, zoom down Wales’ longest sledge run or embark on a Jungle Boat Adventure.

20. Put a bet on the Big Family Funday Race Meeting, Chepstow

What is it? Family Fun Day race meeting with live horse racing and lots of free children's entertainment and Paddington Bear will be there at various times throughout the day. Once inside all the children's entertainment is free. There will be rugby skills playzone provided by Newport Gwent Dragons, a football skills playzone provided by Cardiff City Community & Education Foundation, a jockey’s autograph session, bouncy castles and face painters. A steel band will be supplying music during the afternoon.

When is it? August 31, with gates opening at 12.10pm and the last race will be at 5.35pm

24. See an original Victorian engine in action, Caerphilly

What is it? This remarkable machinery at the Winding House in New Tredegar was used to operate the cages which transported men and coal between the surface and the mine below, in the former Elliot Colliery. The engine runs for approximately 10/15minutes.

When is it? The engine is run by volunteers on the last Saturday of each month - starting at 12 noon.

27. Take a safari in Oxwich Bay Seashore

What is it? Join marine biologist Judith Oakley on a 'Seashore Safari' adventure to discover the amazing hidden shore life of Gower. You will need to wear suitable clothing and footwear as you will get wet feet and the ground is uneven! No nets. Children MUST be accompanied by an adult. Ages 3+. Safaris last approx. 2.5-3 hrs.

What is it? The new £6.3m lido is due to officially open its doors to the public at the end of August and should stay open until the end of October. Ponty Lido, at Ynysangharad Park in Pontypridd, will also be known as the National Lido of Wales and there will be three heated outdoor pools.

When is it? The official opening is August 29

How much is it going to cost me? Nothing, as charges will not be introduced until the beginning of summer 2016

30. Go back to the Medieval Fair at Kidwelly Castle

What is it? Something for all the family, mediaeval camp, mediaeval ale tent, delicious foods, craft stalls, card readings, face painting, modern wizardry, minstrels, choirs, live music and dancing, circus skills, workshop and displays. Have a go archery! Shoot a live knight!

When is it? Saturday, August 29, with the castle open from 9.30am and events from 11am to 9pm

What is it? Bring your children to be Junior Farmers at this rare breed farm near Llandeilo for a half day Junior Farmers activity. Ideal for children four to 12 year olds who love getting up close to animals, getting muddy and learning about farming

34. Pirates on Parade at Margam Park

What is it? A day of pirates, ship wrecks, whales and lots of fun. Visitors are being urged to come in fancy dress.

35. Don't forget to go and see Wales' newest dinosaur in Cardiff

What is it? The skeleton of a new Welsh dinosaur is on display at National Museum Cardiff and this would be the ideal weekend to see it as it leaves on September 6. The dinosaur is approximately 200 million years old, the oldest Jurassic dinosaur ever found in the UK. It belongs to the theropod group of dinosaurs and is related to Tyrannosaurus rex, although our dinosaur was walking the earth about 130 million years earlier than its more well known cousin.

When is it? The museum is open all weekend including the Bank Holiday Monday. It is normally closed on Mondays but open for Bank Holidays

36. Get spooked on a St fa*gans Castle Ghost Tour

What is it? Take an evening ghost tour of this Elizabethan mansion which sits in the grounds of a Norman Castle. St fa*gans Castle is a ghostly enigma. For years staff and visitors by day have reported fleeting glimpses of the inexplicable: sounds, sightings and sensations. On the ghost tours you will walk through the building, with all its lights out, for stories of these experiences, set against tales of its very changeable fortunes over the centuries.

What is it? There is a veritable bonanza of family fun and games this bank holiday weekend at the Garden featuring a familiar formula of music, magic, balloon modelling, birds of prey and the world-famous Quack Pack. Plus the Garden looking it’s very best in its high summer finery . . . and now comes with added croquet.

When is it? The garden is open from 10am to 6pm and events place will take place on three days over the bank holiday weekend

39. Bring out your inner Rory McIlroy at the golf in Cardiff city centre

What is it? Treetop Adventure Golf in Cardiff city centre will be hosting a series of events as part of their Treetop's Summer Adventure programme, which includes - Every Monday in school holidays they will have a face painter from 10am to 4pm. It is great fun for all the family and ideal if it is raining or you want a break from shopping.

When is it? Treetop is open every weekday from 11am-11pm, and from 10am on weekends.
