An Impact Investing Portfolio in Public Equity (2024)

You will find an English version of the portfolio checklist at the bottom of this page.

- valuta risico zoveel mogelijk vermijdenen

- beleggen in Public equity.

IMPACTINVESTING PORTFOLIO i.o.

Buildinga public equity impact investing strategy depends primarily on the investor's riskprofile. You can start cautionsly with a few % of the portfolio forimpact investing as an investment style(in line with a sustainable portfolio). There are fewer investmentopportunities, because many sectors and companies are excluded, butthe number of sectors which can be invested is wider than the impactfocus of major private equity investors such as on microfinance ,sustainable agriculture, etc. Also impact investing does not have tobe a purely international activity in developing countries. TheNetherlands and the Eurozone offer plenty of impact investingopportunities.

Investor'sprofile
This is an impact investingstrategy (or checklist ) for:
- Small investors,
- Focused onfixed income and a bit of value,
- With a neutral investor profile(tests at bankwebsites),
- Currency risk minimizing; and
-Investing in Public Equity: spreading risk over bonds, equities, index trackers or exchange traded funds and mutual funds.
- Maybeeven some private equity because crowdfundingplatfroms now offersmall investors opportunities such as loans with risk analysis forstart-ups and SMEs.

Thus the impact investments take place in type 3,4 & 5:

IMPACTINVESTING CHECKLIST
Impact investing isall about product and / or sector allocation ... so ask yourself: -1–
Is the company (partly) active inan impactful area's? And -2 – Arethe mission, vision, strategy and tactics focused on sustainabilityand impact?
For me sustainability ispreventing or reducing harmful effects on humans and the environmentby operating with a corporate social responsability policy applyingEnvironment, Social and Governance standards. Think of reducingenergy, water and (raw) materials, providing a safe workplace anddevelopment opportunities for employees and implementing (future)legislation as early and effectively as possible.

In the company listed inSRI funds (or ETF's?) at
www.sustainable-investment.org (Stock database) or duurzaam-beleggen.nl

More and moreresearch is being done into ESG factors within this category. Sometimes this leads to suprises, see IINieuws 1mei14 (duurzame bedrijven controverisial top 10). Tip by the Blogger: google names of sustainable companies combined with accused, fine, lawsuit, corruption, fraude, moneylaundering, controversial, environment, deforestation, displacement, land grabbing, health etc. Thus you can see if companies are investigated, accused, in lawsuits, settlements or have been convicted for such behavior.

Ofcourse statebonds are also impact investments Notethat states invest in defense i.e. weapons, but not in prohibitedweapons.Robeco (SAM) and Korean SolAbility publish benchmarks of country's sustainability (IINieuws-15dec13).

Een recent exiting development is the explosive growth of the offering of green corporate bonds which is expected to continue this year. Check out MARKET in the 15maart14, 1april14 en 15april14 blogs.

Dilemma
Theultimate dilemma of the impact investor is that the impact ofsustainable companies can turn out negatively when compared to theeffects of their business on a global scale.

Example: the automobileindustry is the biggest investor in clean tech with it's investments in electric cars. Transport & traffic cause 23% of CO² emmissions and the emissions keep growing.
Example: Like Mars companyhelping poor cocoa farmers and supporting a Symbioscience divisionfor life science and mens health but as core business manufacturingsweets adding to the worlds obesity problems causing death, (chronic)disease and societal costs.

A smart investor spreads risksover funds and sectors which in my opinion means chosing impactsectors, best-in-class companies and index trackers or exchangetraded funds (due to the wide spread and the low costs). They listlarge cap companies who are usually doing the most interesting thingsimpactwise thus inspiring their competition to follow or evenoutperform them.
In an etf or mutualfund the impact effects ofimpactful companies are undermined by the overall effect of a sectoror investment product. I guess only

Oikocrediten theme investmentfunds offered by TriodosBank,ASNBankand RobecoSAMoffer (more) assurence the allover impact is positive.

How do I invest?

My portfolio in online (in Dutch sorry)mijn-portfolio-langs-de-impact-meetlat, with an explination why I think it is an impact investment and the impact level according tot the Impact Indicator© the-case-for-an-impact-indicator for investment products
I'll invest in impact sectors and high yield bonds of sustainblecompanies, international sustainability or sector ETFs and shares ofDutch best-in-class sustainable companies. I look at their impactactivities, R&D and investmentsand divestments strategy (when possible, companies are not alwaystransparant).

Later I TINA'd* and bougth more stocks and etf 's because I had boughtthe most interesting bonds in 2012 and sold them when the currentyields rose above my coupon ambitions. Buying corporate bonds of(best-in-class) companies and/or in impact sectors turned out to be quite expensive or they had low ratings and green bonds have very high nominal value (100.000e).
I started a pennystock with impact portfolio at DeGiro as it has no management fees and very low (international) transactions costs. Somewhere during May-to-October I will invest in the companies that publish their impact report at the Social Stock Exchange in London, corporations mentioned in Trueprice/publications (qualtifies societal, environmental & human capital costs) and other companies I encounter during my research.*There Is No Alternative (than shares)

Tip: Oblis.behas a wonderfull overview of European corporate bonds and the currentyield. (Note it is a Belgian platform, hence the coupon tax of25%).
I do not invest in mutual funds because of the managementfees and costs.

Goodluck ! Investing involves risks, past performance is no guarantee forthe future and good intentions such as impact investing goals are noguarentee against bad luck, bad judgement or black swans.

Iown SNS bonds which I bought because the Dutch SNS bank has an ImpactInvestment Asset Management division. They were nationalized (!) injanuary 2013 and to date no compensation has been paid or agreedupon. Several legal procedures have been set in action. Fortunately anon profit was set up for small bond holders (sos-ns.com)and the Dutch stockholders association VEB is active for stockholderinterests.
