's mother have been intimate for a very long time — dating back to before he was born. In fact, Vance is actually Hardin's biological father! Following this revelation, Hardin leaves the bar, and Tessa finds him crying on the street.
Hardin is the product of a long-standing affair between Trish Daniels and Christian Vance. Trish was married at the time of Hardin's conception, and led her husband Ken Scott to believe he was Hardin's biological father.
He is the typical bad boy. Before Hardin met Tessa, all he cared about was feeding his ego and meeting his sexual needs. He did many horrible things to women and had no empathy for his actions affected them. He struggles with rage and lashing out verbally and physically when triggered.
The story begins with the childhood trauma experienced by Hardin without the presence of a good father figure in his life. Hardin was forced to grow up with his father who had remarried with another woman, leaving his birth mother alone in London.
Hardin made a bet with his edgy friends to take Tessa's virginity, which he succeeded in taking. He even saved the bloody sheets from when they did it to show his friends, which is disturbing. In the movie, the dare is taken down several notches, with it instead being for Hardin to make Tessa fall in love with him.
It's revealed in the final book, After Ever Happy, that Hardin was sexually abused and coerced into a relationship at 14 or 15 with his mother's neighborhood friend.
Two years after graduating NYU, Hardin and Tessa fall pregnant after trying for quite some time and even sadly suffering a miscarriage. After welcoming a miracle baby girl they welcome a baby boy six years later – who would have thought Hardin would be a parent to two kids!?
When he and Tessa return to finish dinner, he apologizes to everyone for his behavior. After dinner, Hardin admits to Tessa that he wants her more than he has ever wanted another person or thing in his whole life. Tessa realizes this is an admission of his genuine feelings for her, and she kisses him.
In the movie "After Everything," Tessa does get pregnant despite being previously told that she couldn't conceive. The movie doesn't explicitly explain how Tessa becomes pregnant, but the book series, which the movie is based on, provides more clarity on the matter.
This becomes a recurring issue in their relationship, with Hardin unable to control his jealousy whenever Tessa interacts with another man, convinced they all have ulterior motives and want to sleep with her, even his stepbrother Landon.
I loved Hardin and Tessa's happily ever after, it was nowhere near perfect to get there. I hated their toxicity at first but they finally got it right! The part about Tessa having a miscarriage broke me, I absolutely felt that!
Tessa forgives him for his initial lies in the first film, but their relationship is never smooth sailing from then on, and when she finds out that Hardin published a book about their relationship and her trauma without asking her, it appears to be the last straw in their relationship.
Their argument extends to the hallway, where Hardin states that "his" Tessa would never kiss a stranger. She angrily yells that there is no "his Tessa" anymore. Now hurt by her words, he lies that while she was kissing that guy he was sleeping with Molly.
Christian is revealed to be Hardin's father in After We Fell when Hardin catches his mother and Christian hooking up on the eve of Trish's wedding. This happens while he is married to another woman with whom he has another child, Smith.
Looking at him from a clinical/psychological viewpoint, I believe he has substance abuse disorder, intermittent explosive disorder, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD).
