Before I began to use coupons to save money on my groceries, I listened to a few webinars about using coupons. It suggested learning to use coupons at a single store to start with, and then branch out to additional stores. Each store has unique coupon policies so it makes sense to learn one store at a time to avoid confusion. One store that I avoided learning right away was Walmart. The store intimidated me because they didn’t have traditional sale cycles that I had learned about. Many grocery stores change their prices on an almost weekly basis. So this week a loaf of bread might be $1.25, next week it could be $1.30 and the week after that it might be $1.05. Walmart doesn’t run sale cycles this way, instead, they have “everyday low prices” meaning their normal price from week to week is consistently low instead of fluctuating. I recently spent some time focusing on learning to save at Walmart and I really regret putting it off for so long. While it is a little different than some stores, there are plenty of ways to save at Walmart. Here are 6 ways that I save money at Walmart.

1. Use coupons. Walmart doesn’t have specific coupons released by the store but you can use manufacturers coupons from the newspaper and coupons.com among others.

2. Clearance. My mother in law shops for kids’ clothing at Walmart the end of the season (to buy for the year ahead) and gets incredible deals – I’ve seen her bring home bags full of clothing with each item being under $5 each.

3. Rollback deals. While Walmart doesn’t have typical sale cycles, they do have rollback deals on items which can lead to amazing savings.

4. Great Value brand. Great Value is Walmart’s store brand and they make a version of almost every grocery item that I buy, and usually at a lower price as well. For most items, the quality, texture and flavor are extremely similar to the “big” brand.

5. Large Quantities. For items that your household uses a lot of, and that don’t expire quickly, Walmart is a great place to buy large quantities. They often have bulk packs of snacks and other groceries that I can’t find in other stores.

6. The Savings Catcher app. I just tried this app out for the first time but I already love it – it’s free to download. The Savings Catcher app basically takes the effort out of price matching. You purchase items like usual and then scan your receipt with your smartphone (or type in the TC# found directly above the barcode on your receipt on walmart.com/savingscatcher).

It takes about 2-3 days for the app to search stores in your area. If they find that you purchased an item that is available for sale at a lower price at a store in your area, you’ll be credited the difference. For example, I purchased some baby outfits for my nephew’s baby shower that is coming up, as well as some co*ke 2 liters and a frozen pizza. The 2-liters were $1.44 at Walmart. The app found that Meijer in my area had 2-liters on sale for $1.00 that week, so I was credited .44 per 2-liter that I purchased, giving me a $1.76 credit from that order.

You can scan up to seven Walmart receipts with the Savings Catcher app per week and you can make up to $599 back with the Savings Catcher each year. My plan is to “forget” about the credits I get through the Savings Catcher throughout the year and then use the balance to buy Christmas gifts!
