15 funny ways to save money you might laugh at (but you will save money)

Just a quick heads up, some of these are hilarious, some are crazy and some are downright extreme. But they will save you money.

When money needs to be saved, you got to do what you got to do. And if that means trying more extreme ideas to save dollar here, a few pennies there, then you go for it.

And if you can save money and still have fun, all the better.

1. go to bed when it gets dark

Going to bed for the night as soon as it gets dark is one of my more silly money saving tips. How do you save money this way? Well, by saving on your electric bills for starters.

You could also save cash as you can’t do online shopping in the dark. Crazy? Maybe, but I bet you save money!

This could also be one of those fun ways to save money as a couple that you actively want to do, you don’t always need to sleep when it’s dark!

Amy Dacyczyn the author of The Tightwad Gazette (my most favorite book on frugal living) used this money saving tip and had twins as a result, even though they hadn’t planned on adding to their family!

2. cut your own hair is pure money saved

Trips to the salon cost money, but when you’re on a tight budget, cutting your hair yourself is an awesome money saving tip.

If you are considering shaving it off all together or just trimming up the back of your head then here is some advice. Make sure that you know how to cleanly cut and style your own hair before doing so!

YouTube videos are your friend here. Watch a few videos to get a better idea of how to cut hair.

3. stop making love until you’re old

This is of course one of the more tongue in cheek funny ways to save money, but it does have an element of money saving.

Kids cost money and they cost a lot of money according to this study. The cost of the clothes, food and toys can really add up for parents on a tight budget.

So why not consider delaying having children or even better – don’t have any at all! Leave the love until you are past 50 🙂

4. hoard everything

You never know when something is going to be useful. Rubber bands, empty egg boxes, old cereal boxes, old pens and pencils.

Whatever you have laying around your home can be used for something else, eventually. Unfortunately, until you do find a use, this money saving hack means you have to live with piles of stuff that take up space.

You could also lose a few friends if you store too much such that friends find it uncomfortable to come round because they struggle to get in the door!

5. flush less

The more you flush the more water and energy goes down the drain. Stop flushing toilet paper, tissues or anything else that is biodegradable to help your savings!

There is a saying that can help you determine when to flush and when to hold fire:

If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down.

How much money you could actually save might only be pennies but think of the eco friendly aspect. Water is not free, it’s a precious commodity whether you have to pay a bill or not.

6. re-use your grey water

Grey water is wastewater that has been used for purposes other than drinking or cooking. You can use it to flush your toilet, water your garden and wash the car without using fresh water from the tap!

It might sound like a rather unusual frugal tip but many people now build their homes to allow for grey water reuse. Less funny ways to save money, more eco friendly money saving.

7. shower at someone elses place

I think this is one of the more unusual ways to save money but can be very helpful. Some gyms are laid out so you can walk straight through to the changing rooms (with showers) without paying or checking in.

If your local gym isn’t like this then take advantage of friends and family living by. Pop by their house and cheekily ask to take a shower there instead of at yours.

You’ll save on your water and energy bills. Friendships might be a little strained after a few weeks though!

Another way that you can save on water is by taking shorter showers. By turning off the faucet while lathering up, rinsing yourself down or using a timer, you will be able to conserve some of this precious resource.

This is one of my favourite ways to save money because once you have your shower time down, it becomes a lot easier and quicker in the morning!

You won’t be tempted to linger or shave any longer than necessary so this can actually help with saving on water consumption too.

8. Don’t use soap

You can get clean without using soap in the shower or bath by using a sponge or loofah.

I know we have been conditioned to always use soap but rubbing your skin under the water with a sponge or loofah will help you to get clean and be saving money at the same time! Your skin will also be softer and less dry if you use this method.

9. find alternative to toilet paper

This one might sound a little strange but if you are serious about money saving then toilet paper can be an expensive item to buy when on a tight budget.

Many people who are trying to be more eco friendly use ‘family cloths’ as a green alternative to toilet paper. You may prefer reusing scraps of old towels and clothing as your family cloth. Alternative you can buy these eco friendly family cloth.

10. use a torch to light your house

This is an unusual way to save money. The idea of this tip? Use a torch and not electric lamps or lightbulbs so you can save on your electric bill!

It takes a bit of getting used to, only having the one bulb to light a room but it will help you to cut down on costs as well. Especially if you use an eco friendly wind up torch like this one.

It might sound silly, but think about the cost of flowers and food alone for your funeral – that can be really expensive even if only a few people attend.

12. Pretend you forgot Christmas

Christmas is a wonderful time of year, but it can be expensive too. If you are on a tight budget then why not try to pretend that Christmas doesn’t exist and ramp up your money saving?

If you forget Christmas, then you don’t need to buy any gifts, trees, cards or decorations. You will also be saving money on your electric bill by not having Christmas lights up for 24 hours a day!

14. re-use your urine as a fertilizer

This might seem more ridiculous than a funny way to save money but can actually work out very well. You could get yourself some containers and start collecting your urine in them every day so that you have enough stored up for when the need arrives to use this free fertiliser on your plants or lawns.

Alternatively, start a compost heap and pee directly on it. Easier if you are man it must be said!

15. don’t get sick

Getting sick can be expensive in terms of both time off work and medical costs. If you want to save money, make sure that you take good care of your health!

This is one of those funny money saving ideas that is less about being ridiculous and more about common sense.

16. don’t buy anything ever again

This is the ultimate silly money saving idea but saves on grocery bills as well as any other shopping trips. The idea behind this one?

Never spend another penny on clothes or food – just use what you have and don’t buy anything new.

17. eat a raw food diet

Eating your food without cooking it is one of the more unusual frugal tips I can tell you. Having raw food means it costs you nothing to cook.

No electricity bills to cook it or even freeze it. My husband thinks this is a crazy and ridiculous money saving tip as who wants to eat a completely raw diet? Except people do!
