What does wild bluebell smell like?

The olfactive profile of the Bluebell is reminiscent of the Hyacinth. It is not a very strong fragrance but it becomes very noticeable when walking through a Bluebell wood. We describe it a green-floral, as it is oily-green and quite intoxicating.

Our native bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, otherwise named common bluebells, English bluebells, British bluebells, wood bells, fairy flowers and wild hyacinth, is an early flowering plant that naturally occurs in the UK. It appears in ancient woodlands and along woodland edges in April and May.

Luckily, Meghan Markle's favorite perfume is from one of our favorite perfume brands – Jo Malone London. For an everyday scent, Meghan wears Jo Malone's Wild Bluebell perfume. English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) are native to France and England and have been gracing gardens and wooded areas with their beautiful bluish-purple flowers since the early 1500's. These spring delights reach heights of 12 inches (30 cm.) and can be planted in the fall for spring bloom.

All parts of the bluebell plant contain toxic glycosides that are poisonous to humans, dogs, horses and cattle. If any part of the plant is eaten, it can cause serious stomach upset, and if consumed in large quantities, may be fatal. The bulbs are easily mistaken for spring onions or garlic.

Although the native English bluebell and the larger Spanish bluebell are often grown in gardens, they can multiply and become a nuisance, requiring control.

Where do wild bluebells grow?

They're native to moist woodlands and floodplains at the edges of forests in Eastern North America. They grow from New York west to Minnesota and south from Arkansas to North Carolina. They're hardy in zones 3-8. A carpet of Virginia bluebells in full bloom is quite the sight to see on a spring hike.

What is the bluebell flower myth?

In folklore, bluebells were said to ring when fairies were summoning their kin to a gathering; but if a human heard the sound, it would be their death knell. Not surprisingly, it was considered unlucky to trample on a bed of bluebells, because you would anger the fairies resting there.

They flower in March to April, and need to be deadheaded afterwards. Tulips attract Bumblebees, solitary Bees and Hoverflies. Introduced to the UK but long naturalised, there are 20 or so species of cyclamen in the genus that are native to areas around the Mediterranean, Northern Africa and parts of western Asia.

Bluebell plants and bulbs contain 'scillarens', chemicals that reduce the heart rate. This can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and disorientation in dogs.
