After thinking of my experience and browsing through knittingparadise.com I can say that it depends on the lace stitch pattern, but most of the time you will actually need less yarn. It might feel this way because of larger needles and blocking, but “yarn over”s really take a bit less than other stitches.

Use a zigzag or mock overlock stitch to sew along the raw edge of your hem. A good zigzag option for a single layer of fabric is the three step zigzag. Instead of sewing one stitch with each zig and zag, it sews three little ones. This helps prevent the zigzag from making a ridge in the fabric.

Embroidery designs that are simply meant to be stitched on fabric are just as effective for creating lace, because, in my approach, they'll be sewn onto a layer of tulle sandwiched between two layers of stabilizer (I'll talk about that in a moment), and the tulle serves as the thread underlay.
Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle. A sharp sewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroidery needle. That means it will make smaller holes in the stabilizer. Freestanding lace is seen from both sides, so wind a bobbin with the same thread that you're using in the needle.
