What is eternal life according to John?
John W. Ritenbaugh says that eternal life is knowing God, and that Jesus implies an intimate relationship with God that matures over time.
Eternal life is the phrase used in scripture to define the quality of life that our Eternal Father lives. The Lord declared, “This is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39). Immortality is to live forever as a resurrected being.

You enter heaven by forgiveness and through the righteousness that Jesus gives you. You do not enter into heaven by the Christian life. It's always true that where faith is birthed, works will follow, but salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
ETERNAL LIFE is knowing God, intimately, personally. This shows itself through loving relationships. You seek with God's help to love Him with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself! This especially shows itself in your relationship to other members of His family.

Living an Abundant Life
For a Christian, fullness of life is not measured in terms of wealth, power, or prestige, but seeking after God and His goodness. We must grow in the grace and knowledge of our savior Jesus Christ. Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Abundant life is living life to the fullest, not merely existing or simply trying to make a living. In Matthew 6:25, Jesus says, “not to worry about our life, what we will eat or drink, or what we will wear.” Abundant life is not necessarily a life of comfort and ease. It means that the Christian does not wait for eternal life to begin at death or when Christ returns, as he promises to in this passage. For the Christian eternal life begins upon belief in “him who sent” Jesus. Those who believe will repent and put their faith in Christ and begin living.
