What fish do you catch in canals?
If you're new to fishing you're most likely to catch: Roach: very common, they have a silver body with grey-brown to orangey-red fins and like to swim in shoals. Gudgeon: one of the nation's favourite fish, these little blue/grey fish fit in the palm of an adult's hand. Bream: nearly every canal will have bream.
Cod, haddock and bass are all common examples of round fish. The majority of these fish species can be found in relatively shallow water; as a result they are regularly caught by sea anglers across the UK.
Canal fishing for carp is a challenge, but potentially highly rewarding. A fish of 42lb 12oz was caught from the Grand Union Canal in 2000. Most canals hold a few carp but the skill is in locating their likely haunts. Look out for overhanging offside vegetation or reed beds.
UK consumers prefer cod and haddock. We eat these fish more than any other nation. This is the fish served most often in our fish & chip shops. Most of this comes from the Icelandic, Norwegian and Barents Seas, where around one twelfth of the total is caught by the British trawler Kirkella.

Each day you can only take from rivers: 1 pike (up to 65cm) 2 grayling (30cm to 38cm) 15 small fish (up to 20cm) including barbel, chub, common bream, common carp, crucian carp, dace, perch, rudd, silver bream, roach, smelt and tench.

Is there catfish in UK canals?

The flight boasts 30 locks and raises the canal 220 feet. The deepest lock in the UK is Tuel Lane Lock on Rochdale Canal which is over 19 feet.
' Not very safe at all. That might explain why swimming in canals is not permitted anywhere in the UK, and the Port of London Authority only allows swimming in the Thames upriver of Putney Bridge, through to Teddington. You can still get your summer dip, though.
Do trout live in canals?
Canal-like rivers provide very poor habitat for trout and many other fish, because they lack the essential variation in habitat that supports different life stages – gravels for spawning, shallow areas for juveniles and cover to hide from predators.

However, as these sharks prefer warm waters, it is highly unlikely that you'd find them in British seas. Usually, the great white can be found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea.
In UK waters we find two main species of squid the Atlantic or long finned sqid Loligo forbesi and the European or common squid Loligo vulgaris. Squid have 8 arms and 2 longer tentacles which are used to capture their prey.
The common prawn is found around most of the British Isles. It is an important species as it provides a source of prey to many species of fish, and is also commercially important. It also has use to anglers as bait.
The north Atlantic, and in particular the waters referred to as the EU's Northern External Waters, has a plentiful stock of cod and haddock supplying the UK's fish & chip shops.
You can get a fine of up to £2,500 if you're fishing in these areas and cannot show a valid rod fishing licence when asked. There are different rules for fishing in the rest of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Children under 13 do not need a licence. Licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free.

Under Section 27 of the Salmon & Freshwater Fisheries Act, 1975, anyone aged 13 or older in English and Wales must have a valid rod licence to fish in freshwater. Fishing at sea generally does not require a rod licence.
Where do pike hide in canals?
Locks. In comparison to natural rivers, nearly all canals tend to lack features. Because of this, locks can be excellent places to find pike, providing boat traffic and rules permit. The water just behind the lock is a great place to begin, as it is usually full of oxygen and natural food.
Most of these fish are caught in shallow water. Big pike, however, go deep. Many times they are in water 15 feet deep or deeper.
Pike can grow to a relatively large size: the average length is about 40–55 cm (16–22 in), with maximum recorded lengths of up to 150 cm (59 in) and published weights of 28.4 kg (63 lb).
The catfish (Silurus glanis) is the largest freshwater fish within the UK and probably also within Europe.
They are the most abundant of the introduced crayfish in the UK and now occur in many rivers in England, Wales and Scotland and are spreading along rivers, streams and canals, becoming very abundant. Signal crayfish carry crayfish plague and compete with the White-clawed crayfish for shelter.
There are two common species of dogfish in the UK, the Lesser Spotted Dogfish and the Bull Huss. Both belong to the Catshark family. These salt water fish are sometimes called Rock Eel or, if you're in a fish and chip shop, Rock Salmon. Dogfish are almost exclusively scavengers that prowl around on the seabed.
It also needs shallow water to be successful. The shallows warm up much quicker than deeper parts. If these 2 conditions are not met, the pike will not be able to spawn.
Both Musky and Northern Pike will feed in shallow water or in deep water. Many people think pike only hang around in shallow water but nothing is farther from the truth. Northern Pike in lakes with Whitefish and Lake Trout will go deep to feed. On many lakes Northern Pike will go deep and stay deep in the fall.
Channels between shallower areas or islands can be real 'hot spots' on all gravel pits. Prey fish can easily be ambushed in such channels and pike often herd huge shoals of prey fish into these areas in the winter to feed on at will.

The sturgeon is the king of anadromous fish. Archaeological evidence suggests that UK sturgeon strongholds were first devastated by Saxon river fish-traps over a thousand years ago. The sturgeon were prized for their meat and caviar, as they still are to this day.
A barracuda has been netted in British waters off the Lizard, on the Cornish coast. The "fearsome" metre-long specimen caused some excitement at Newlyn fish market when skipper David Kessel brought it in. It is the first European barracuda ever recorded in UK waters.

Urban canals do hold big fish, but their main appeal is plenty of smaller ones and lots of bites. After a long cold winter, keep your kit light and your lures small. For perch and zander I like lures of 5cm-8cm, and for small pike 8cm-12cm baits are ideal.

You must have a rod fishing licence for England and Wales if you're fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel with a rod and line in: England (except the River Tweed)
The primary reason for the large trout is that excess feed from salmon cages sift into the canals and large schools of wild trout simply hang around and gorge themselves on this feed.
The canal stretch is a popular coarse fishery. Pike, perch, roach, bream and eels are abundant.
To fish on the canals, you will need to either: Purchase a yearly permit from the Canal & River Trust under their Waterway Wanderers scheme. An adult permit will cost you £23 for the whole year and will allow access to various fisheries. Buy a temporary day permit.
Canals are always difficult places to catch fish in winter but worth the effort as they contain some great fish and you never know you may even have a real red letter day too.
