What happens to roses at night?
Scientists know the mechanism behind the phenomenon: In cool air and darkness, the bottom-most petals of certain flowers grow at a faster rate than the upper-most petals, forcing the flowers shut.
Flowers close their petals at night because they are protecting the pollen and other reproductive parts of the plant that are inside from the cold and rain. Also, many flowers are pollinated by insects and birds that are active during the day, so there is no reason to be open at night.

A common theory: Plants may have adapted to capture water more efficiently. Plant leaves lower and spread out during the day to catch rain and absorb moisture before closing inward at night, perhaps allowing water droplets to trickle down to their roots. Some researchers think that this movement keeps pollen dry.
Flowers open and close in reaction to temperature and light. Many, such as roses, snapdragons, daisies and geraniums, stay open once they bloom, whether it's daytime or nighttime. Others, such as four o'clocks, open in the late afternoon in reaction to cooler temperatures.
Morning glories, also known as ipomea, are a common flower species that close at night and reopen each morning, hence their name.
Although plants do not sleep in the same way that humans do, they do have more and less active times and they have circadian rhythms—internal clocks that tell them when it is night and when it is day. And like many people, plants are less active at night. When the Sun comes up, however, they awake to the day.

∙ Pollination which occurs in the closed flowers is called cleistogamy and the flowers which are permanently closed are called cleistogamous flowers. ∙ In cleistogamy, transfer of pollen grains occur in the same flower (self-pollination) as the flowers are closed and pollen grains cannot come out of the flower.

Why do plants reach up at night?
The absence of light actually stimulates plants to grow fastest at night. Plant phytochromes detect darkness, encouraging growth hormone production, causing the plant to elongate in search of light. The same process helps plants orientate their foliage to light and helps seedlings stretch in search of light.
Your rose will sleep lightly during our mild California winter. As soon as you cut the stems (during pruning in late winter), hormones are released throughout the plant, telling it to wake up and replace the missing canes. Roots begin to grow – and start making food.

Fresh rose petals will usually last up to three days after being plucked from the flower. You can also dry your flowers or petals after you have used them and save them for as long as you'd like.
BROKEN ROSE BUD OR STEM - Most commonly the hanging bud is used on headstones of children who died an untimely or premature death. The broken bud or stem represents the flower that did not bloom into full blossom, the life that was cut short before it had a chance to grow to adulthood.
Life expectancies of roses can vary anywhere from 6 years to 100 years. However, the most likely time spans are 6–15 years for standard roses and up to 30 years for climbing roses.
