Are Oreos the same in every country?
This favorite cookie is manufactured by Nabisco, a division of Mondelez International. While most consumers know Oreo sandwich cookie as two round chocolate biscuits with a vanilla crème filling in between, variations of the product can be seen in other countries.
Both the US and UK Oreos are primarily sweetened with sugar. Both have HFCS listed after the cocoa. In the UK HFCS is called glucose-fructose. The formulation is adjusted for different tastes, and in this case is really just a slight change in texture of the biscuit.
The UK uses natural additives such as Spirulina extract, Red Beet Juice, and Turmeric extract to color their Oreos, whereas the US uses chemicals such as Yellow 5, Blue 1, Red 40, and Red 3.
They have switched the fat twice. First, from lard to trans fat, then from trans fat to high oleic vegetable oil. They have also added High-Fructose Corn Syrup to the recipe at some point.
The biggest markets are the US, China, the UK, Indonesia, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, India and Germany. In fact, the US and China alone accounted for 70% of Oreo's business in 2019.
