Do iris flowers change color?
Occasionally, we hear that an iris has changed color. There are several possible reasons why an iris flower loses color, but it generally doesn't change color entirely. Temperature changes, chemical drift, transplant issues, or even random rhizomes dug up by a dog can cause a stand of iris to change color.
The black iris is one of the rarest flowers in the world, and displays a very unique mix of colours, it is characterised by a dark purple almost black colour' with a mesmerizing Lilac hue and a white spot in the middle of the flower.
The Iris flowers have 260 to 300 species that vary in forms, shapes, sizes and colors that include purple, lavender, white, yellow, orange, pink, blue and brown.
Flowers are available in shades of blue, brown, chocolate, maroon, mauve, orange, pink, red, tan, white, and yellow as well as bicolors. And blooms are often further adorned with contrasting beards, crests, and attractive veining.
In general, it's rare for eyes to change color. They may appear to change when your pupils dilate or shrink, but this occurs because the pigments in the irises come together or spread apart. In some cases, eye color can darken slightly during puberty or pregnancy, or as you reach your later years.

There are two common types of iris that grow from bulbs and these are easily distinguished from one another by their bloom time. If your plant has a bulb and blooms in early spring along with snow drops and before tulips,it is a reticulata type. If your plant has a bulb and blooms in mid summer it will be a Dutch type.
The most likely cause of the bloom color change is accidental exposure to an herbicide. Sometimes when we apply weed killer the chemical can drift over to unintended targets. In the case of bearded iris, the exposure can alter the color and shape of the flowers even before they emerge.
How long do iris flowers last?
Bloom time for each variety lasts approximately two weeks, depending on the weather. There are some Tall Bearded Iris that bloom early and some that bloom late, so try some of each to lengthen your season by a week or two.
But while most irises sit out the summer, rebloomers multiply in a frenzy of growth. By late summer or fall, they're ready to flower again. Where the growing season is long enough, reblooming irises are known to squeeze in a third or even a fourth flush of flowers.
After blooming is finished, cut flower stems down to their base to discourage rhizome rot, but do NOT trim the iris' leaves. The plant's foliage carries on with photosynthesis and generates energy for next year's growth and flowers. Only prune off brown leaf tips, if desired.
Cataracts – A cloudiness on the lens of your eye (behind the pupil) that can appear grey in color. Cataracts are common as you age and are often removed through surgery. Injury or trauma – When the eye is injured, the iris can be damaged and make your eye color appear changed.
As you grow up, the melanin level increases around your pupil, making the eye darker. However, 10-15% of Caucasian eyes change to a lighter color as they age, as pigment in the iris changes or degrades.
Arcus senilis is a gray or white arc visible above and below the outer part of the cornea — the clear, domelike covering over the front of the eye. Eventually, the arc may become a complete ring around the colored portion (iris) of your eye. Arcus senilis is common in older adults.
You will want only to remove flowers that have begun to fade or wither. Not all irises will produce multiple blooms, but bearded Iris varieties and reblooming irises can benefit from deadheading. The process will encourage further blooming throughout the season and make the plant look more attractive.
Iris has a powdery, older feel and can also smell like damp cement, or like a sidewalk does after a thunderstorm. There's actually a word for this, called petrichor, and it means “the smell of the earth after a rainstorm”, and it's one of the things iris does best in a perfume.
Irises multiply fairly quickly and when the plants become overcrowded they produce fewer of their lovely blooms. It is very easy to divide iris plants to rejuvenate them, and for the best display, bearded irises should be divided every three to four years.

Is iris the flower of death?
The name iris comes from the Greek word for rainbow, and it is fittingly the name of the Greek goddess of rainbows, Iris. As a carrier of messages from the mortal world to the gods, Iris was also believed to help brings souls to the afterlife. So, iris flowers were associated with death in ancient Greece.

As previously mentioned, exposure to light causes your body to produce more melanin. Even if your eye color has set, your eye color could slightly change if you expose your eyes to more sunlight. Let the seedpods ripen and turn fully brown and begin to split open before you cut them off and store them in a cool, dry place. In the fall, as it begins to cool, plant the seeds in the garden in an area prepared with amended soil and that is weed free.
What do yellow iris eyes mean?
Yellowing may be seen in the iris if a person has jaundice. Sclera: These are the whites of the eye. The sclera surrounds the iris and protects the fragile structures on the inside of the eye. Jaundice are often first noticed because the sclera becomes yellow.
For longest life, place your iris in a cool place, away from draughts, radiators or direct sunlight. Keep fresh cut flowers away from fruits and vegetables, Ethylene gas, naturally given off by ripening fruits and veggies, is harmful to cut flowers.
Iris Make Great Cut Flowers
Place them in a bucket of tepid water and recut the stem end underwater at an angle one inch up. Display your Iris in a cool niche away from direct sun and drafts. Pinch off and remove wilted flowers immediately. Check the water level every other day and replenish as needed.

It usually takes several weeks for iris leaves to completely die back. By early fall, the leaves are usually ready to be cut back, according to the Utah State University Cooperative Extension. Leaves should be cut back to about 6 to 8 inches above the ground. Then, wait until after the first hard frost.
After dividing my irises, I called on friends and family to donate for their beds, but my garage was still full of rhizomes. I have a few friends who want starters for future planting, so I have put them to rest until they could be relocated. If stored properly, the rhizomes will last a year.
A normal part of caring for iris bulbs is digging them up and putting them in other areas of the garden. Iris plants that are healthy and thriving will need to be divided to keep those blooms popping each season.
The right time to remove the flower stalks is a few days after all the blooms have faded. While the flowers are beautiful, the dead flower stalks are not. Cut them off to keep the plants healthy and looking good.
