Do beans need oxygen to germinate?
Essentials. The beginning of the growth of a seed into a seedling is known as germination. All seeds need water, oxygen and the right temperature to germinate.
Oxygen is very vital for germination of a seed. It supplies the cell with the energy required for cell division. Oxygen provides this energy by the oxidation of the stored nutrients present in the seed.
Beans do not like to be transplanted. Germination temperature: 70 F to 80 F - Germination is slow and poor when soil temperatures are below 60 F. Days to emergence: 8 to 10 - Germination may take two weeks or more if soil temperatures are below 60 F. Seed can be saved 5 years.
Water allows the seed to swell up and all the chemical reactions involved in the growth of the embryo to take place. Oxygen is needed for aerobic respiration which provides the energy the embryo needs to carry out cell division and grow.
Plants. Beans are warm weather vegetables that require soil and air temperatures above 60ºF for best germination and plant growth. Start planting beans one week before the last frost-free date for your area.
The primary reasons for failed germination are: Seeds get eaten – mice, voles, birds, and wireworms all eat seeds. Check to see that the seed is still in the soil. Seeds rot – planted too deeply, over-watered, or in cold weather, our untreated seeds may simply rot.

Too much or too little water is the most likely reason for seeds not germinating. With too little or no water, seeds remain dormant. With too much water, seeds become susceptible to rot or infection from soil-borne fungi (also referred to as "dampening off").

How would you prove that oxygen is necessary for germination?
In flask A hang a test tube of plain water. Observation: The seeds in flask A germinate because of presence of oxygen and seeds in flask B do not germinate because pyrogallic acid absorbs oxygen. Result: Oxygen is necessary for germination.
The bean should start to grow roots after a few days, this is called germination. We kept one bean in the dark and one in the light, both germinated and grew into small bean plants. This shows that light is not necessary for germination.
No soil: Seeds will germinate without soil, but will they keep growing and produce fruit (beans) if left in the container with no soil? This will take a lot longer to observe. Another option is to plant the beans in sand. Give them water and sunlight, and observe what happens.

One easy way to make seeds germinate faster is to presoak them for 24 hours in a shallow container filled with hot tap water. Green beans grow best when air temperatures range from 65°F to 85°F. Soil temperatures should be at least 55°F for good seed germination. Air temperatures above 85°F can cause flowers to drop and slow production.
Mung beans and lentils are the easiest and fastest to sprout. Alfalfa, chickpeas, and adzuki beans are also good for beginners, but need a little more time.
Soaking can accelerate germination and increase the proportion of seeds that successfully germinate. Seeds have evolved a protective coating around the embryo so the embryo can survive being dispersed by some means. The coating protects the seeds until they find themselves in a suitable place to grow into a new plant.
Most of the seeds germinate best in dark environments. The presence of light tends to inhibit their growth. The light decomposes carbonic acid gas and expels oxygen which leads the seed to harden. These gases are key factors that promote germination.
Water test: Take your seeds and put them in a container of water. Let them sit for about 15 minutes. Then if the seeds sink, they are still viable; if they float, they most likely will not sprout.

What conditions are needed for a bean plant to grow?
Beans grow best in full sun, planted in well-drained and warm soil. While pole beans require trellising, bush beans can grow unsupported. These growing instructions are for common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris). There are several other species of beans, including runner beans, lima beans, cowpeas, and soybeans.
By soaking the seed, it enables the new growth from the inside to push through the hard shell and grow. The seeds that could benefit from a good soaking include: corn, pumpkin, beans, chard, beets, and peas.

You can quickly kill seeds and harmful micro-organisms in soil using your kitchen oven. Heating your soil to temperatures between 180 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit will kill any seed in the soil after 30 minutes.
Many sources recommend 8-12 hours and no more than 24 hours. Again, too much soaking and the seeds will start to decompose. If you use very hot water, the soaking time will decrease. We've always liked to use warm water and start the soaking at bedtime, then plant first thing in the morning.
Green beans may also be purchased as seedlings or you can start them yourself indoors. Three weeks before transplanting outdoors, sow seeds in sterile seed-starting mix kept at a temperature between 60° and 85° Fahrenheit, and they will germinate in 5 to 10 days.
Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) probably take the prize for least demanding garden vegetable. These fast-growing plants need the nutrients all plants need -- nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium -- but in much smaller amounts than most plants.
