Expert Response. Consuming fruit fly larvae is not harmful, but most Americans don't prefer to have a little extra protein with their fruit so will not consume them. . If you can the fruit most of the worms will float to the top of the jar and can be removed. They are not harmful.

You can spray a few different things, but I recommend Monterey Garden Insect Spray. The active ingredient, Spinosad, is not as toxic as Malathion or Sevin yet effective on certain insects. It is also OMRI listed! Begin spraying as soon as you see the adult flies on the traps or as the cherry begins to turn color.

Good control can be achieved with a few well-timed pesticide sprayings beginning when the earliest maturing variety in the orchard is just starting to turn from green to straw-colored. Traps should also be set to determine if the fruit flies are present.

The greenish worm is probably the pear slug. The pear slug is not an actual slug. It's the larval stage of an insect (sawfly). The pear slug feeds on pear, cherry, plum, and several other woody plants.

If you submerge the cherries in water, it is the worms (the larvae of cherry fruit fly) that may float to the top. if these larvae appear in the water, you can look for the damaged cherries.
