Everyone loves a good candle. Setting the mood, freshening up the air in your home, or just relaxing after along day, candles can make a big difference in your home. Of course, you can get candles just about anywhere you look for them – from big box stores like Walmart to that little boutique store in town you love. You might be tempted to choose the cheaper option from the chain store but you’re better off spending a few extra dollars for that nice soy candle from the independent retailer. Here’s why.
A clean burn
Most candles are made from paraffin wax and have been for quite some time now. Paraffin is a biproduct of crude oil. It was discovered in 1830 during the oil refinement process and quickly became the most popular candle wax, as it was cheaper to create than tallow and burned cleaner. However, the incomplete combustion of petroleum-base fuel creates soot that contains carcinogens. Not only does the soot coat leave residue on walls, curtains, and surfaces, it can be very damaging to your health if you burn candles often. Soy wax creates no soot when burned and doesn’t create carcinogens. If your soy candle is ever producing black smoke, it is likely because your wick needs to be trimmed, but not as a result of the wax itself.
Longer burn times
Soy wax has a lower burn temperature than paraffin and will last 30 – 50% longer than paraffin candles. The soy candle might seem like the more expensive option but when you compare the longevity of the candles, soy doesn’t really cost you much more money at all.
Better scent dispersal
The lower melting point means that the melted wax creates a larger pool surrounding the burning wick and the fragrance oils disperse better from the larger surface area of melted wax. With a soy candle, you will get a stronger scent than you would with paraffin.
Good for the environment, good for the economy
Because paraffin is an oil product, it is not the most environmentally friendly process to produce it. Soy wax is harmless to produce and it helps to support local farmers who grow soybeans. Additionally, soy is biodegradable, unlike paraffin.
When paraffin wax was created, it was the superior choice to tallow. But now, we have an even better option that is good for us, for our environment, and for the world.
