How to Make Ice for Whiskey: Clear Ice vs. Regular Ice (and Why That Matters)

The Clear Ice Revolution

This is about to be like chemistry class in high school, but since we’re talking about bourbon, I would assume you’re more interested. 🙂

The first thing to know about whiskey ice is that the ice from your ice maker isn’t good.

It’s filled with air bubbles and impurities that make it melt faster (which is why it looks cloudy).

There’s a more “pure” form of ice called clear ice that you can make that doesn’t have these bubbles or impurities.

And it melts much slower and is incredibly satisfying to look at.

Making clear ice isn’t a requirement for “properly” drinking whiskey, but it’s important to know what it is and how to make it.

Who knows, clear ice could make whiskey on ice even better.

How to Make Clear Ice for Whiskey

There are 3 options here for making clear ice for bourbon. Note that making 100% clear ice at home is close to impossible, but these methods will help make clearer ice.

Option 1: The Cooler Method

Take a standard insulated cooler (like one you’d take on a road trip) and fill it with water.

Put it in your freezer without the lid for 1-2 days.

The top will be clear since it’s the first part to freeze (the rest will be cloudy).

Then, simply transfer the ice to a cutting board and carefully cut your cubes.

Option 2: Boiled Water Method

Boil water, pour it (carefully) into a silicone ice mold, and put it in the freezer.

Then, remove your cubes and store any leftovers in a container to keep a stash on hand.

Option 3: Clear Ice Makers

There are a few different kinds of clear ice makers you can buy that make this process a lot easier.
