What Size Grow Tent Do I Need? (2023 guide & buying tips) (2024)

NO two grows are ever the same. Neither are grow tents.

Although they come in loads of different shapes and sizes, they’re all designed to do one job: home and cultivate plants.

Whether you know exactly how many plants you want or only have a specific area to work with, this guide will explain what size grow tent is right for you.

Planning Your Grow

Before doing anything, draw a rough outline of how you want your growing area to look.

It doesn't have to be fancy. Even the most basic drawing can help to visualise where everything needs to go.

Carefully consider the watering process and make a list of all the equipment you’ll need for refilling reservoirs (if growing in hydroponics) or for run-off, if growing in soil.

Having chosen your location and figured out the watering process, make sure you leave enough extra space to work in and around your plants.

Grow tent tips to try before you buy

How much space do you have?

Before buying a grow tent, you need to know your growing area and the size of tent that will physically fit in it.

Buy a grow tent that’s too big and you could end up paying more than you need for heating, lighting and other hydroponic equipment.

Choose one that’s too small and it could get overcrowded, creating an environment that’s not right for mature plants.

What hydroponic equipment will you use?

Most grow tents and systems are flexible, so you can go up in size if needed. But it’s worth factoring in extra space for grow lights, heaters, humidifiers, fans, extractors and other pieces of kit.

What grow lights will you use?

This will directly influence the type of tent you choose. The more intense they are, the bigger your grow will be – and you’ll need a taller grow tent.

How many grow tents do you need?

Usually, most people only need one grow tent. For optimum results, we recommend using two – one for propagation and one for the vegetative growth and flowering stage.

What budget do you have?

No matter what size you want, your budget will always determine the grow tent you choose. Cheap grow tents may cost less, but spending a bit more can often mean it lasts longer and produces more crops – making it a better long-term investment.

How much grow tent space do I need per plant?

THC growers often cultivate pot plants in a wide variety of sizes – from small seedlings to heavy-yielding grows.

To determine the total amount of space you’ll need in a grow tent, a good rule of thumb is to provide 10 litres of soil for every foot of plant height.

Don’t forget to leave a bit of extra breathing space too!

The most commonly available grow bags are 25 litres and 50 litres. But a plant’s branches will probably grow around 13cm to 15cm beyond the edge (on all sides).

What grow tent shape and size should I buy?

Once you’ve decided what to do with your layout, it’s time to figure out which grow tent size (and shape) is right for your space.

The grow tent’s manufacturer is the best authority on grow tent sizing and this can usually be found in the detailed product description.

Based on a rough estimate of 120cm² of space per plant (using a 15 litre or 30 litre grow bag), the following guidelines show how many plants you could grow.
