What should I do if my network is offline? (2024)

If your network is offline, websites won't load, Internet-connected devices in your home might not work correctly, andyou won’t be able to use your WiFi network with mobile devices.

This article assumes that you are not setting up any new devices and your network was previously working correctly. If you are setting up new NETGEAR devices for the first time, see the following articles:

If your network is offline, try the following steps to regain access:

Power cycle your network

If you have connection issues with your NETGEAR devices, performing a complete power cycle of your network might help. To power cycle your home network, you must turn off all of your networking devices and then turn them back on. For more information, see How do I power cycle my home network?

Check your Internet connection

You can look at the LEDs on your NETGEAR devices to see if they are connected to the Internet. For more information, see What do the LEDs on my NETGEAR router mean?

Your router gets its Internet connection from your modem. If your modem is not connected to the Internet, your router cannot connect either. If you are unsure if your modem is connected to the Internet, try connecting a device directly to the modem with an Ethernet cable and launching a web browser to see if you can still access the Internet:

  • If you can access the Internet from your modem: Your modem is working correctly, and the problem is most likely with your router or mesh system. Reconnect your modem to your router, power cycle both devices, and proceed to the next troubleshooting step.
  • If you can’t access the Internet from your modem: Your Internet service provider (ISP) might be experiencing an outage, or the physical cables that deliver the Internet connection to your home might be damaged. We recommend that you contact your ISP for further assistance. For more cable modem troubleshooting steps, see I’m experiencing connectivity issues with my NETGEAR cable modem or modem router, how can I troubleshoot it?

Log in to your router for further troubleshooting

If your modem is getting an Internet connection but your router isn’t, your router might be configured incorrectly. Try logging in to your router from www.routerlogin.net. For more information, see How do I log in to my NETGEAR router?

The next recommended troubleshooting steps depend on whether you can log in to your router:
