Experimenting with colouring flowers using natural dyes, it took him roughly six months of fine-tuning the process before his method was perfected. Since its conception back in 2005, millions of Rainbow Roses have since been ordered and spread throughout the globe.
The science behind the art
Now, time for the fun part! Grab your paper towels, it’s about to get messy. Here’s how to DIY your very own Rainbow Rose!
Using a white or cream coloured rose - the Dutch Vendela is a popular choice - carefully cut lengthwise along the stem, approximately 5cm from the end of the stem. Next, rotate the stem 90 degrees and make another 5cm long cut. The stem should now be split into four sections. Tip – use a sharp, thin knife as this will minimise damage to the stem. Each thinly cut stem is then placed in a different vase of water with its own dye solution. As the rose absorbs the water, the petals begin to reflect the colour as well. When the water evaporates, the dye remains and the petals are transformed! The process takes between 12 and 24 hours and it can be used to create any colours, save for black and white.
This rainbow method may also be used on carnations, hydrangeas, orchids, as well as chrysanthemums.
