What Essential Oils Kill Aphids? And How? | Pests Banned (2024)

Is there anything more frustrating than seeing your precious plants besieged by those tiny, sap-sucking menaces known as aphids? I feel your pain. But guess what? Today, we’re going to dive into a solution that’s as pleasant as it is effective… Essential oils!

That’s right, nature’s fragrance powerhouses might be the aphid-busting superheroes we need. The question is, what essential oils kill aphids?

A range of essential oils can deter and potentially kill aphids. These include coriander, lavender, fennel, oregano and juniper essential oils.

What Essential Oils Kill Aphids?

Alright, let’s dive into this aromatic world of essential oils and aphids. Here are some of the most potent oils that could help you deal with those little plant pests:

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil is like a refreshing, invigorating blast for us but aphids, not so much. Its strong scent makes it a great deterrent and it can even kill aphids when applied directly.

While I don’t have an exact efficiency rate, in my experience and from what I’ve heard from other gardeners, it’s pretty effective.

How to Use Peppermint Oil

Mix a few drops of peppermint oil with a bit of mild liquid soap (this helps the oil mix with water) and water in a spray bottle.

Shake it well and spray it on the plants, especially focusing on the under-leaves where aphids love to hang out. Just be careful not to overspray, as higher concentrations can harm your plants.

Will Peppermint Oil Kill Aphids?

Now, peppermint oil is quite the powerhouse. In my experience, it not only deters aphids due to its strong scent but also can kill them when applied directly. It’s one of the more effective essential oils for combating these pests.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus oil is another potent aphid foe. It’s also great for deterring other pests like beetles and spiders. Again, I can’t provide an exact efficiency rate, but it’s one of the most recommended essential oils in the gardening community for pest control.

How to Use Eucalyptus Oil

Similar to peppermint oil, you’ll want to dilute eucalyptus oil with a little liquid soap and water. Spray the mixture on your plants, ensuring to get the underside of the leaves.

Will Eucalyptus Oil Kill Aphids?

Eucalyptus oil is quite effective. It has a strong aroma that deters aphids and other pests, and when applied directly, it can indeed have a lethal effect on these tiny invaders.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary oil is quite the multitasker when it comes to pest control. It’s known to deter a variety of insects, including aphids. The woody, herbaceous scent of rosemary is something these tiny bugs don’t appreciate, so it’s pretty good at keeping them away.

As for its killing power, it’s not the most potent but works well as a deterrent.

How to Use Rosemary Oil

Again, the drill is the same. Mix a few drops of rosemary oil with water and a bit of liquid soap in a spray bottle. Spray this solution on the leaves of your plants, giving special attention to the under-leaves.

Will Rosemary Oil Kill Aphids?

Rosemary oil serves primarily as a deterrent to aphids, not necessarily a killer. It’s effective at keeping them at bay, but it doesn’t usually eliminate them on contact.

Thyme Essential Oil

Thyme oil has a strong aroma and it does a decent job at repelling aphids. However, its strength lies more in its deterrent properties than its ability to kill aphids.

How to Use Thyme Oil

You’ve got the drill by now, haven’t you? Mix a few drops of thyme oil with a little liquid soap and water in a spray bottle, then apply it to your plants.

Will Thyme Oil Kill Aphids?

thyme oil is more of a deterrent than a killer when it comes to aphids. It can help to repel them, but it’s not typically the most effective essential oil for actually killing these pests.

But, Which is the Best?

Peppermint essential oil often comes out as the best for deterring aphids. Its potent scent seems to be particularly off-putting to these little pests, which makes it an excellent choice for keeping them away from your cherished plants.

How to Make an Essential Oil Spray

Mix several drops of essential oils from the above list with water to make a spray for your affected plants.

You should use around 4 or 5 drops of each of these essential oils (peppermint, rosemary and thyme) in around 1 to 2 litres of water. Just mix together in a spray bottle.

You can then use this spray directly on your plants, it is not harmful to them and it will kill the aphids on the leaves that you spray. However, only apply the oils to the plants if diluted with water or even a soap mixture.

If you apply full-strength essential oils directly to the plant, they can be toxic and can cause damage to the plant’s leaves and stems.

After making your spray, it is a good idea to test it. Spray the solution onto a couple of specific leaves; these can be ones with or without aphids.

Leave the solution on the plant for a few hours and return to check if the spray has damaged any leaves. As well as this, if you sprayed it onto a plant with aphids, you can check if any of the aphids have left or died on the plant.

You’ll be surprised how quick it can work!
