Vinegar soak before soldering

Postby lampshade »

What is on the outside of a copper part that has been soaked in vinegar? It makes the copper dull. Is that OK to solder to, or must the copper be sanded to a shiny finish before soldering?

To get a good solder joint. You should clean it shiny first. Making sure not to touch it with your hands. The oil from you skin can make it hard to adhere to it. I clean mine with foreshots. Then apply flux.

It'snotsocoldnow.

I clean mine with rubbing alcohol, is that the same as cleaning with foreshots?

I would not clean with rubbing alcohol, but not 100% sure on that. I'll tell you what really works good, soak your parts in a thing of hot water and cherry kool-aid, minus the sugar of course, and they will come out looking almost new, then just go over the joing with a quick emry cloth or steel wool and that is good to go!
Below is a piece of 3/4 inch pipe i had left around and outside for the last 8 months. This was after 6 hours in cherry koolaid and not a tad of elbow grease-

Basically. It's just a solvent to remove any oils before you coat it with flux.

But I also do a acid dip after I get whatever I'm soldering. And do a good cleaning run before use.

Will the flux clean the oil from your skin?

Vinegar is acid. That is exactly what fluxes are. Use it for a flux if you want. Acetone will remove oil.

Not sure what your asking here? Clean the oils from off of your actual skin? Or clean the oils on the copper from your skin?

Back in the day before I heard of a flux brush, when making my pot still, I just put the flux on with my forefinger. The joints were look proof but not all that prerty, not sure if it was due to oils or my overheating the joint, but I would definately just use a set of cheap flux brushes and a glove if you want to do it proper or soemthing in that area
