The chemistry of alum coagulation:

Al2(SO4)3Alum.18H2O+3Ca(HCO3)2(Alkalinity as CaCO3)2Al(OH)3(ppt) +6CO2(gas)+3CaSO4(permanent hardness)+18H2O

The points to remember from the above equation are:
1. Alum reacts with alkalinity and hence decrease the alkalinity.
2. Precipitate of Al(OH)3 is formed.
3. Decrease in pH since alkalinity is reduced
4. With the formation of CaSO4, permanent hardness is induced in the water.
